(Y/n) froze, the sound of his voice stirring emotions she hadn't prepared for. She could feel her pulse quicken, her skin prickling with a mixture of anxiety and something else, something unnameable like water threatening to pull her under.
The weight of unspoken history settled between them like a heavy fog. She searched his face for any sign of familiarity, any trace of the playful, unpredictable boy she once knew. But all she found was a tired gaze, and maybe a flicker of something akin to regret.
"Hey," she managed to respond, her voice barely above a whisper.
Kai's eyes lingered on hers for a moment, heavy with things neither of them had the courage to say. He shifted his weight from one foot to the other, running a hand through his grown-out roots as if the motion could ease the tension between them.
"You look... good," he said, though the words felt strange, too casual for the setting. He glanced down for a moment, his fingers fidgeting with the cuff of his coat.
(Y/n) gave a small, awkward smile, unsure how to respond. "You... too."
A strange mix of emotions churned in (Y/n)'s chest as she stood before Kai. Part of her wanted nothing more than to put as much distance between them as possible, to leave behind whatever unresolved tension still lingered. But another part, one she hated to admit, was curious to see how he was doing, to see how life had treated him since they last spoke.
Kai shifted awkwardly, his eyes tracing the ground between them before flickering back to hers. "I'm... glad I get to see you again," he said softly, his voice carrying a note of melancholy that weighed down each word.
"...You too," she replied instinctively, though the truth was anything but that. She wasn't glad. Not really.
Kai's expression faltered, and for a moment, it looked like he was struggling to hold back whatever had been sitting heavy on his heart. "I'm uh... I'm sorry-" he started, his voice breaking with the weight of words he had held in for far too long.
(Y/n) lifted a hand, silencing him before he could get any further. "Not now, Kai. We're here for Reina today."
His brows shifted just slightly, a subtle change in his expression that hinted at the disappointment lurking beneath his otherwise composed exterior. She could see the way his shoulders sagged, as if her words had deflated whatever fragile hope he had brought with him.
"I know, but-"
Before he could finish, a third voice cut in from beside them, disrupting the moment like a stone thrown into still water.
"Sheesh, they let you out looking like that?"
(Y/n) blinked and turned toward the familiar voice. Asahi.
The sight of him felt almost surreal- his gray hair, which normally hung messily across his face like a storm cloud, was now slicked back neatly, revealing sharp features that were usually hidden beneath the chaos. His outfit was shockingly formal: a sleek black suit, tailored perfectly to his lean frame, with a crisp white shirt beneath and a slim black tie. A silver chain glinted subtly from his wrist, adding just the faintest hint of rebellious flair.
It was strange to see him like this, without his usual disheveled, nonchalant appearance. And now that his face was fully visible, (Y/n) could finally take in the details she hadn't bothered to take note of before.
His eyes bore the same detached, bored expression that always seemed to accompany him, as though nothing in the world was quite worth his full attention. They were sharp, but there was a sense of perpetual disinterest in the way they skimmed over people and things. His gaze lingered lazily on Kai, lips twitching into a smirk that teetered on the edge of mockery.
