Cold water assaulted her body like a slap to the face. (Y/n) gasped awake, jolting upright. Her first instinct was to scramble out of the freezing downpour, backing herself into the farthest corner of the shower where the water couldn't reach her. She hugged herself tightly, arms crossed over her chest as goosebumps erupted all over her clammy skin.
Her hair stuck to her face, her clothes soaked and clinging uncomfortably to her body. Her breath came in panicked gasps, the shock of waking up under freezing water leaving her reeling.
When her bleary eyes finally adjusted, she saw him. Yuuto. His yellow eyes gleamed coldly as he shut off the shower with a deliberate, uncaring twist of his wrist. He took a step back and eyed her up and down, his expression radiating disgust.
Her hatred for him flared instantly. She pressed herself further into the corner, glaring daggers at the boy. Yuuto's eyes flicked over her without emotion, as if she were some filthy object that needed cleaning.
"Come on out," he ordered, stepping aside as if to make room for her.
(Y/n) shook her head sharply, every muscle in her body rigid with defiance. She wasn't about to make this easy for him. Water dripped from her soaked clothes, puddling at her feet, but she didn't care. Her defiance was the only weapon she had.
Yuuto's patience was already wearing thin, she could see it in the subtle clench of his jaw, the way his lip twitched like he wanted to sneer. Good. Let him be mad.
"(Y/n), I'm not asking," he said, voice dangerously calm. "Step out. We have things to discuss."
Her glare only hardened, sharp enough to cut glass. She wasn't going to play along. Not after everything they'd put her through.
"Like how you tried to kill two kids?" she snapped, fury lacing her voice as she hugged herself tighter, teeth clenched to stop them from chattering. "Like how you tried to make me kill Hayami!?"
The words came out like venom, each one thick with disgust and rage. Her anger was the only thing keeping the terror at bay.
At that, Yuuto's lips curled into the faintest, most infuriating smile. A smile that screamed, "I've already won."
"Not tried," he corrected smoothly, his smirk growing. "Hayami was pronounced dead at the hospital this morning."
The words hit her like a sledgehammer. Everything around her seemed to spin.
Dead? Hayami... was dead?
She felt the blood drain from her face, and her heart pounded violently in her chest. Her breath hitched as Yuuto's words echoed mercilessly in her mind. Dead.
Her mind tried to deny it- No, it can't be true. But his expression said it all.
"You're lying," she whispered, though her voice faltered. It was a hollow denial.
But Yuuto's smile only widened, an unsettling calm washing over his expression.
"You did it," he said softly, as if savoring the moment. "You killed her."
The realization slammed into her, threatening to shatter her completely. She killed Hayami. She hadn't wanted to- she had tried to save her. But it hadn't mattered. She still died.
Her legs felt weak, and she slumped further into the corner of the shower, her soaked clothes clinging to her like chains. It was for nothing.
The house burned down anyway. The kids were still at risk. And Hayami was dead.
Her hands started shaking uncontrollably. She could feel the blood on them, even though it was long washed away.
The lump in (Y/n)'s throat grew thick, suffocating her. She didn't even register Yuuto's annoyed muttering as his cold hands grabbed her under her arms and yanked her out of the shower. The sharp tug barely stirred her; her legs wobbled beneath her like jelly, and as soon as he shoved her toward the bathroom exit, her knees buckled, and she collapsed onto the cold tile floor.
