TW: MENTION OF SH
Finally, Kai emerged from the closet, his movements slow and deliberate, as though he carried the weight of the world in his hands. In one hand, he held the cracked phone she'd found hidden in his bag; in the other, his fingers curled tightly around a small object, something silver, sharp, edged, that glinted faintly. Her eyes locked onto it as he moved closer, and it took a moment for her mind to register that it was a pocket knife.
"I'm sorry..." he whispered, his voice breaking, and she felt herself freeze as he took a few halting steps toward her. A few tears slipped down his cheeks, carving dark paths through his eyeliner as he blinked them away, golden-red eyes holding hers with a painful, almost pleading intensity. "I never meant for it to go as far as it did."
The words struck her like a blow, and her (e/c) eyes widened in shock, each syllable sinking heavily in the silence. She opened her mouth to speak, but her voice faltered, caught in her throat. Her mind was flooded with questions, every memory now colored by doubt and dread.
She didn't need to say anything, though; he kept talking, the words tumbling from his lips in a frantic, painful confession. He fell to his knees before her, his body folding as he looked up with those desperate, guilt-ridden eyes, searching her face for any flicker of forgiveness.
"It was me... all those messages, (Y/n). Every last one. I never traced it... and it was never Aiko," he admitted, voice trembling. His hands clutched tighter around the pocket knife as though he needed something to steady himself. "It was all Yuuto's plan. He made Keiji sneak the phone into her bag... and Riku, that night on the rooftop? That was part of it too. All of it- it was all orchestrated." He choked, the words spilling faster, voice breaking. "I wanted to protect you, (Y/n). That's all I ever wanted."
(Y/n) stared at him, emotions twisting within her- fear, anger, betrayal. Her voice felt like gravel in her throat, but she forced the question out, the one that echoed louder than the rest. "How did... how did Aiko really die?"
Kai's hands trembled as he clutched the knife, his gaze fixed on the floor beneath him. "It was never supposed to go this far..." he mumbled, voice thick with anguish. The words were more to himself than to her, his focus lost somewhere between guilt and desperation.
"Kai-" Y/n started, but he cut her off with a sudden, choked sob.
"You weren't... you weren't willingly choosing us, (Y/n)! Don't you understand?" His voice cracked as he raised his eyes to hers, the deep red of his gaze shining with a raw, unfiltered sorrow. "It had to be done," he said, and the conviction in his voice faded as he continued. "If I had known what all of this would do to you... if I'd seen the price you'd have to pay, I would have never trusted Yuuto."
The tears fell freely now, carving streaks through the eyeliner smudged across his cheeks. He began to crawl towards her, knees scraping against the floor, every inch forward feeling like penance. When he reached her, he knelt at her feet, head bowed in a heartbreaking display of vulnerability. His voice was barely a whisper. "I deserve to be punished for putting you through all of this."
(Y/n)'s jaw was slightly parted, her eyes flicking to the door out of habit, waiting for someone - anyone - to intervene, to step in and put a stop to this bizarre, twisted moment. But the hallway remained silent, and they were alone. She looked back at him, the apology dying on her lips as an odd, sickening noise filled the air. A wet, squelching sound, muffled and visceral.
