(Y/n) lingered just outside his doorway, her hand hovering in hesitation. She'd stood here countless times before, but those were different, they'd always been moments of reluctance, of resistance. Now, she was here willingly, though the tension knotted in her stomach reminded her that her purpose was far from friendly.

Taking a steadying breath, she knocked. The sound of scrambling and a muted thud came from the other side, followed by the creak of the door swinging open. There stood Kai, golden eyes wide with surprise, his gaze dropping to meet hers.

"(Y/n)," he said, her name slipping from his lips almost dreamily, as if he weren't sure she was really there. His usual eyeliner outlined his weary eyes, and his blond hair, tousled and unkempt, fell into his face as he studied her. In the soft light, there was an androgynous softness about him, a strange contrast to the sharp tension in the air between them.

"That's me," she replied, her voice steady as she glanced over his shoulder, taking in the familiar disarray of his room. Her gaze lingered on his bed, the piles of clothes scattered on the floor, the half-open window casting a sliver of light into the dim space.

He swallowed, his throat bobbing as he pulled himself from whatever thoughts had entranced him. "Ah, um, come in," he said, awkwardly stepping aside and gesturing for her to enter.

"Thanks." (Y/n) slipped past him into the room, catching the faint scent of cologne and something else, something slightly metallic and sharp, lingering in the air. She resisted the urge to shudder, focusing instead on the task at hand.

Kai closed the door, shuffling behind her as though uncertain of what to do with himself. She could feel his eyes tracing her every movement, an intensity behind his gaze that always seemed to hover between affection and something darker.

"So, whatcha doing here?" he asked, his voice betraying a mix of curiosity and nervousness as he glanced between her and the window.

She shrugged, keeping her expression as neutral as she could manage. "I just... I don't know. You're the most tolerable one to be around." The lie slipped easily from her lips. She could barely tolerate any of them, let alone Kai, but he didn't need to know that.

His face brightened, the faintest hint of a smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. "You think so?" He let out a quiet, almost bashful laugh, and for a moment, the hard edges softened. He looked like a normal teenage boy, one unburdened by the shadows that had taken residence in this house.

She nodded, returning his smile with just enough warmth to keep the illusion intact. "Yeah."

Kai took a seat beside her, his presence warm and uncomfortably close. "You know... I've always wanted us to get along," he murmured, his eyes meeting hers with a quiet sincerity that almost unsettled her.

She fought back a scoff. Getting along wasn't even on her list of priorities; she was here for something much bigger, something that could buy her freedom. But she nodded, keeping up the ruse. The closer she could get, the more answers she could pry from him.

"You're the only one who ever really gets me," he continued, his voice a soft murmur, like he was letting her in on a secret. "It's like... I don't have to pretend with you."

(Y/n) leaned back slightly, her gaze thoughtful as she measured her next words. Change the subject. Make him as uncomfortable as he makes me. "Um... whatever happened to Riku's body?"

Kai's expression shifted, his golden eyes betraying a flicker of discomfort. He glanced away, his jaw tense. "Keiji dealt with it," he answered, voice curt as if the topic itself could burn him.

Her brows furrowed, sensing more behind his quick answer. "What does that mean?"

He stood abruptly, running a hand through his hair, trying to hide his unease with a dismissive wave. "It just means he won't be found," he muttered. His gaze darted around the room, anywhere but her face. "Anyway, how about we go for that walk in the garden, huh?" He reached for her arm, urging her to stand.
