Finally, (Y/n)'s dream came true; she was getting discharged from the hospital. It was a Tuesday morning, and after what felt like an eternity of restless nights, stifled emotions, and painful recovery, she was finally walking out the door. Her feet moved slowly as she stepped into the waiting room, still getting used to the freedom of being outside her hospital room.
But her heart clenched when she saw who was there, slumped against the wall, fast asleep. Riku. His head rested awkwardly against the white plaster, his mouth slightly open as he slept. He looked worn out, and she could see the faint bags under his eyes even from where she stood.
(Y/n) felt a wave of guilt wash over her, and before she could say anything, her mother leaned in to whisper, "He's been waiting out here every night, but you needed some space to yourself. I'm sorry."
Her mother's voice was soft, almost apologetic, but (Y/n) frowned, guilt twisting deeper in her chest. She hadn't known Riku had been waiting, night after night, for her. And even though she'd needed that time to herself, it hurt knowing he'd been there alone.
With quiet steps, she made her way further into the waiting room, passing by other parents, friends, and patients. The room buzzed faintly with soft murmurs and the sound of the receptionist typing behind the desk. But all she could focus on was Riku.
She came to a stop in front of him, looking down at his sleeping form for a moment before gently taking a seat next to him. With a soft smile, she reached out and called his name. "Riku."
Her voice was barely above a whisper, but it was enough. His eyes snapped open, and his head jerked forward as he blinked, groggy and confused. At first, his gaze was unfocused, like he wasn't sure if he was dreaming, but then his eyes locked onto her. He blinked again, processing her presence, and then his face broke into the widest grin she had ever seen.
It was so genuine, so full of relief, that it took her by surprise. Riku wasn't one to show much emotion, but this was different. Before she could react, he lunged forward, wrapping his arms tightly around her, pulling her into a fierce hug. His arms encircled her torso, holding on like he was afraid she might vanish if he let go.
(Y/n) stiffened for a moment, caught off guard, but she quickly relaxed, slowly wrapping her own arms around him. Her chin came to rest on his shoulder as she held him back, her heart swelling with emotion. She could feel his unsteady breathing against her, the way his grip tightened like he was terrified she'd slip away again.
"It's okay. You're okay. I'm okay," she murmured softly, trying to reassure him as she gently pulled back enough to meet his gaze.
She glanced behind her, where her mother was at the front desk, filling out paperwork for her discharge. But then her attention returned to Riku.
"You waited here every night?" she asked, her voice quiet, still having a hard time believing it.
Riku nodded eagerly, his eyes never leaving hers. The sincerity in his expression struck her, and she found herself swallowing back another wave of guilt. She should have let him visit. She should have let him in sooner.
"I'm sorry," she whispered, not sure what else to say. He just shook his head, his arms still loosely around her, as if words weren't necessary.
(Y/n) gave Riku a small smile as she noticed her mother was done with the paperwork. She turned to him, her voice soft. "Come on. You don't want to be late to school, do you?"
Riku gave her a look that said everything. School was the last thing on his mind, and it didn't take much to see that he could care less about sitting through classes today. She chuckled at his response, shaking her head as she stood up from the chair. Gesturing toward the hospital doors, she spoke again, this time with more warmth in her voice. "Come on. I'll see you later, okay?"
