Wednesday arrived quicker than expected, and the (h/c) haired girl found herself walking to school alone again. The chill in the air nipped at her cheeks, and she hugged her jacket tighter as October crept further into autumn. The weight of the colder weather settled into her bones, but something heavier tugged at her heart- a strange emptiness she couldn't quite explain, paired with a lingering sense of paranoia.

She passed the neighborhood where Minato's brothers had chased her not long ago, her lips pulling into a grimace at the memory. Even now, her pulse quickened just thinking about it. At least two of them were no longer a problem... but one was still out there.

Her fingers drummed anxiously against the strap of her bag as she kept a brisk pace toward school.

Eventually, she made it through the tall iron gates and into the bustling courtyard, surrounded by a sea of students rushing to beat the morning bell. The chatter was familiar- comforting in a way. It grounded her, reminding her that today, at least, was starting better than yesterday.

She noticed with some relief that the whispers following her around were quieter, the stares less persistent. Sure, there were still a few lingering glances, a quick head turn or two whenever she passed. But it was bearable now. Manageable. Like the storm had passed, leaving only scattered puddles in its wake.

Her shoes echoed softly as she walked down the hallway, weaving between students who lingered at their lockers. At last, she reached her homeroom, pushing open the door to the familiar buzz of conversation inside.

Her eyes drifted, almost instinctively, to the empty desk in the back. Kai's desk.

Her breath hitched slightly at the sight of it. I wonder how he's doing, she thought. How does someone come back from something like that?

The memory of that night gnawed at the back of her mind- the moment when Kai, in a haze of confusion and despair, had tried to kill them both. She could still see the haunted look in his eyes, the way desperation had twisted his features into something soft. It was something she wouldn't easily forget.

With a sharp inhale, she forced herself to look away from the empty seat. I hope he's getting the help he needs, she thought, though the words felt hollow. Did people like Kai ever really get better? She wasn't sure.

Letting out a soft sigh, she slid into her seat, dropping her bag onto the floor beside her with a muted thud. The weight on her shoulders lightened, if only slightly, as she let her mind drift back to the present. The world moved on- one step at a time, just like she had to.

And so the day began, with her thoughts flickering like the last embers of a fire she couldn't quite put out.

The day moved sluggishly, and before (Y/n) knew it, lunchtime had arrived. She sat at one of the round cafeteria tables, her tray mostly untouched, though it was only her and Hayami keeping each other company. She was quietly thankful that the brunette chose to sit with her, especially since she normally hung out with Emi. Honestly, (Y/n) was a little surprised Hayami gave up her usual spot at Emi's side just to sit with her today- but Hayami didn't bring it up. Instead, she chatted away, seemingly content to fill the silence with her usual ramblings about celebrity crushes.
