He stood up from the bed, straightening his posture as he fixed her with a look that was cold, almost too collected.
"His name is Etsuko," he said flatly, the words hanging between them like a verdict.
The name sent a chill down her spine. It was like hearing a distant echo from her past, one she wasn't sure she wanted to face again. She shook her head, trying to process what she was hearing. "Etsuko?" she repeated, her voice trembling slightly as the weight of his words settled in.
Souta nodded once, the expression on his face unreadable. "He's convinced that you're here against your will." He paused, his gaze briefly flicking away, as if he were weighing something heavy in his mind. "And while the last police search didn't turn up anything, he's not going to stop trying. But, like I said," his voice grew more resolute, "I'll handle it."
A cold shiver ran down (Y/n)'s back at the promise in his tone. Handle it. She knew what that meant. She had seen how ruthless he could be, how easily he could snuff out any threat without a second thought.
But she couldn't let it happen. Not to Etsuko.
Before she could think better of it, her body acted on instinct. She shot out from the bed, her legs unsteady beneath her, and she nearly collapsed in the process. She caught herself on the edge of the bed and then pushed herself forward, desperation seizing her chest as she reached for Souta's arm.
He raised a brow, clearly taken aback by her sudden movement. His eyes narrowed slightly, the edges of his lips curling into a small, curious smile. "What are you doing?"
She didn't even hesitate. "No- wait. Don't kill him," she pleaded, her voice small, fragile. The words felt wrong in her mouth, but they were the only ones she could form in the panic that was clawing at her.
Souta's expression shifted into something darker, though he still didn't pull away from her. He simply stared at her, an unreadable look in his eyes. "He's just a boy," she added, forcing the words out, but the fear of what he might do hung heavily in her voice.
"How do you know him?" Souta asked, his suspicion clear as he scrutinized her face. His grip on her tightened, not painfully, but enough to remind her who held the power in this room.
Her heart raced as she scrambled for an answer, feeling her pulse in her throat. "I met him at Reina's funeral," she said quickly, the words tumbling from her lips in a rush. "He's innocent, I swear. He just... he wants to help. He doesn't deserve to die."
Souta's eyes flashed for a moment, and his fingers flexed slightly on her arms, as though considering what she had said. Then, without warning, his grip shifted, and he pulled her closer, cupping her face with his hand to steady her. "Shhh, it's alright, darling," he murmured, the words meant to soothe, but they only made her feel more trapped. "I won't make you watch."
The way he said it made her skin crawl. I won't make you watch. As if it were her choice whether she was a part of it.
"No," she whispered, her voice breaking as she shook her head furiously. "We can go somewhere. Somewhere the police won't find us! We can be safe... just us-"
Souta cut her off before she could finish, his tone hardening, the softness gone from his words. "(Y/n), calm down," he said firmly, his hands now gripping her shoulders, his fingers digging in just enough to make her wince. "Nothing is going to change between us."
She tried to pull away, but his hold on her was unyielding, and she felt too small in his grasp. He was always so strong, so certain, and the weight of that certainty crushed her resolve.
"If you kill him, the police are going to be suspicious and look further into it," she blurted out, her voice desperate, shaking with the effort it took to stay calm. She could feel the panic rising in her chest like a storm, threatening to overtake her.
