TW: MENTIONS OF S*ICIDE
(Y/n) felt the lump in her throat growing, constricting her voice and leaving her chest tight. She always knew Kai was open to the idea of being more than friends- there had always been hints, moments where he'd looked at her a little too long, or touched her hand with a little too much intent. She had even shot him down once. But this? Love? Especially after everything? After Emi? After Taro?
Her mind whirled with disbelief, the silence between them thickening until it became almost unbearable. She could feel his gaze burning into her, watching her every movement, waiting for her response. The tension crawled under her skin, and she shifted uncomfortably, opening her mouth to say something - anything - to defuse the weight of his words. But before she could speak, his hands reached out, gently cupping her cheeks, trapping her in his touch.
His fingers were cold against her skin as his thumbs softly grazed the area under her eyes, brushing away the remnants of her tears with unsettling tenderness. It should have been a comforting gesture, but it wasn't. It felt wrong; too intimate, too intense. There was something about his touch that made her want to pull away, but she was frozen under the weight of his gaze.
Kai leaned in closer, his face inches from hers, his voice soft, almost too calm. "You almost died," he whispered, his breath warm against her skin. "Do you understand that? You could've been gone... forever. And I couldn't let that happen. I won't let that happen."
(Y/n) swallowed hard, her heart racing as his words sank in. The way he spoke about her near-death wasn't filled with the usual worry or relief she'd seen in others- it was something darker, something possessive. As if her survival was less about her and more about what he needed.
"Kai," she started, her voice shaky, "I-I'm grateful that you're here for me. But this... this isn't right. After everything... after Taro..."
At the mention of Taro's name, something shifted in Kai's expression. His hands tensed slightly against her cheeks, his thumb pausing mid-stroke. His golden eyes, once so full of emotion, darkened with something more dangerous, more unstable.
"Taro?" he echoed, his voice tight with barely contained anger. "Taro's dead, (Y/n). He's gone. He's not coming back."
The bluntness of his words sent a chill down her spine, and she flinched. She had just been standing at Taro's grave moments ago, mourning the boy who had so much potential, and now here was Kai, speaking of him as if he were an obstacle that had conveniently been removed.
She shook her head, her breath hitching. "But... you don't just-"
Kai cut her off, his grip tightening ever so slightly, enough to make her feel trapped. "Don't you see, (Y/n)?" he hissed, his voice dropping to a low, fervent whisper. "It's fate. It had to happen this way. Taro's death... it's not just a tragedy. It's what brought us here. To this moment."
Her stomach twisted in horror. The fire, Taro's death, everything she had suffered- he saw it as some kind of twisted justification for his feelings. As if her almost dying was proof that she belonged to him, that their connection was something destined, something inevitable.
"And what about Emi?" she asked, her voice breaking as she grasped for any sense of reason. "She loves you, Kai. She's your best friend."
At the mention of Emi, his eyes flashed with irritation, a sneer twisting his lips. "Emi doesn't understand me like you do," he said, his voice cold. "She's... she's just a friend. You're different. You and I - we're the same. We understand each other on a deeper level."
