Her heart twisted in her chest, her breath caught in her throat. He stood there, motionless, staring down at her from above with the eerie calm of someone who had already made up his mind.
For a second, the night was deathly quiet, just the two of them, staring across the distance.
Then, Souta took a step forward, the crunch of gravel under his shoes audible even from where she stood.
(Y/n)'s heart seized in terror as she stumbled back a step, her feet aching with every movement. The car behind her groaned, the smoke thickening. She couldn't stay here- she couldn't let him reach her.
Souta took another step, his silhouette outlined against the glow of the headlights. Even without seeing his face clearly, she could feel the intensity in his stare, sharp, determined, and utterly unyielding.
She didn't wait to see what he would do next. Her body moved on instinct, and with a pained grunt, (Y/n) turned and staggered deeper into the woods.
"(Y/n)! Don't make this harder than it needs to be," Souta's voice echoed from the hilltop.
But she didn't stop. She couldn't. Not now.
Branches whipped at (Y/n)'s face as she plunged deeper into the dense forest, each frantic step pounding glass deeper into her feet and sending waves of pain shooting up her legs. The muscles in her injured ankle throbbed violently, barely holding under her weight. Her breath came in ragged gasps, lungs burning, but she didn't dare slow down. The adrenaline masked the worst of it, her only focus now was to run.
Somewhere behind her, Souta followed like a shadow. She could hear the crunch of leaves and snapping twigs beneath his boots, always too close for comfort. His voice slithered through the darkness, dripping with an unsettling warmth that made her skin crawl.
"(Y/n)... come on now, don't make this harder." His tone was soft, affectionate, too affectionate. "You shouldn't be out here alone. Not in that condition. It's not safe."
Her legs screamed in protest as she pushed forward, weaving through the trees. Her mind buzzed with a sharp, panicked mantra: Get away. Don't let him catch you. But her battered body fought against every step. The glass shards dug in deeper with every stride, and her ankle twisted painfully with each uneven step on the forest floor.
A low chuckle echoed through the trees. "You really thought you could escape from me, didn't you?" Souta's voice drifted closer, smooth and teasing. "You're cute when you're stubborn. But you should know by now; I always find you."
Tears burned at the edges of her eyes, both from the pain and sheer frustration. Her foot slipped on a patch of wet leaves, and she nearly went down. Catching herself on a low-hanging branch, she forced herself upright with a strangled whimper. She couldn't afford to fall. Not now.
The sound of his deliberate footsteps grew louder. He was closing in.
Then, his voice came again, this time with an amused lilt that sent chills up her spine:
"I bet you wished you'd listened to me when I told you to bring the knife back." He chuckled darkly as if the thought genuinely entertained him. "You can't take me on your own, especially not like this."Her heart twisted violently in her chest. He was right, and he knew it. She was injured, weak, barely holding on- and yet she kept running. She had to.
Branches scratched at her skin, and the forest seemed endless, a maze of shadows and obstacles. She limped onward, her legs faltering, and the weight of exhaustion began to settle over her like a thick fog. Behind her, Souta's steps remained steady, his breath calm and measured.
