(Y/n) swallowed hard, her heart racing as her gaze locked onto Aiko's confused eyes. The rooftop had gone eerily silent, all eyes glued to the two girls as tension thickened in the cool evening air. Slowly, Aiko shifted the backpack off her shoulder, unzipping it with shaky hands. Her fingers rifled through the contents until she found the source of the buzzing: a phone.
She lifted it up slowly, confusion flickering across her icy blue eyes.
"Give it to me," (Y/n) said, her voice low and hard, devoid of any friendliness that once laced it.
Aiko's eyes widened, her lips parting as if to explain. "(Y/n), whatever it is you think I did, I promise you-"
"Give it to me!" (Y/n) shouted, her outstretched hand shaking slightly.
The sharpness of her tone shut Aiko up immediately. Silently, Aiko handed her the phone, now silent in her grip.
(Y/n) snatched it quickly, her heart thudding as she unlocked the screen with a harsh swipe. She immediately navigated to the messaging app, her stomach turning when she saw only one saved number. Hers.
Her thumb clicked on the contact, and in an instant, the screen filled with the series of messages she had been receiving from the 'unsaved number.' (Y/n) felt her face drain of color as she stared at the texts, disbelief and anger swirling in her chest.
Aiko's voice was cautious as she stepped closer, concern knitting her brow. "(Y/n)...? What's wrong?"
But (Y/n) was done listening. She raised her hand, motioning for Aiko to stop speaking, her body trembling with anger. "You've been sending me those messages..." she began, her voice barely above a whisper, struggling to keep calm as the revelation sank in.
Aiko blinked, visibly taken aback. "What? No, I-"
"Are you the one who also sent the letter?" (Y/n)'s voice grew louder, her words laced with an accusation as she glared daggers at Aiko. Her grip on the phone tightened, knuckles white from the tension. "Tell me!"
Aiko took a step back, her confusion now replaced with a hint of panic. "What letter? (Y/n), I have no idea what you're talking about-"
"Why?!" (Y/n) cut her off, shaking her head as she stepped away from her friend. Her chest felt heavy, her breath short. "Why have you been doing this?" Her voice cracked as she stared at Aiko, searching for any semblance of an explanation that could make sense of this betrayal.
Aiko tilted her head, her own frustration rising as she tried to comprehend what (Y/n) was saying. "I don't know what you're talking about!" she insisted, raising her hands defensively. "I haven't done anything- look, Y/n, all I've been trying to do is keep you safe. I swear to you, I've never seen that phone in my life."
(Y/n) clenched her jaw, her anger now simmering beneath a layer of cold disbelief. She took a steadying breath, her voice growing calm, though it held a dangerous edge. "Then why did you have it?"
Aiko froze, the accusation hanging in the air between them. Her mouth opened, but no words came out. For the first time that night, she seemed to falter, the defensive edge in her voice fading into uncertainty.
Aiko's fingers curled tightly, her desperation clear as she tried to get through to (Y/n). "You have to trust me! Everything I've done has been for you. To protect you! Like stopping Riku from... whatever the hell he's planning!" She shot a glance back at Riku, noticing the defeated slump of his shoulders, his hands fidgeting nervously in his pockets. His once wide, hopeful eyes were now downcast, shadowed by uncertainty.
Before Aiko could continue, Yuuto, who had been watching quietly, sighed. He stepped forward, his yellow eyes focused on her. "Aiko, right?" His voice was calm but firm. "You might not be aware of this, but our friend Riku... he's mute."
