And just like that, her fragile peace shattered.
(Y/n) jolted awake, her heart hammering in her chest as a distant ringing echoed through the house. She sat up sharply, her breath caught somewhere between sleep and fear. The living room was shrouded in darkness, save for the faint glow of Halloween decorations and candles scattered around. Her mind spun, still heavy with the remnants of her dreams, but she forced herself to focus.
Across from her, Hayami lay curled up on the other couch, sleeping soundly. The sight was a small relief, but it didn't do much to steady her nerves. (Y/n) swallowed hard, willing herself to breathe through the uneasy thrum in her chest.
The ringing persisted, sharp and insistent, cutting through the stillness of the night. She squinted toward the dining room where the sound was coming from, the glow of the phone illuminating part of the table. She swung her legs off the couch, feet hitting the floor with a dull thud. With each step toward the phone, her limbs felt stiff from the hours she'd spent slumped in an awkward position, but at least she felt a little more rested now, though her mind was far from steady.
The phone continued to ring. She glanced at the screen, the bright digits burning into her eyes. 12:03 AM. No Caller ID.
Her stomach twisted into knots, but she reached for it anyway, groggily picking up the receiver just to stop the relentless ringing. "Hello?" she muttered, voice thick with exhaustion. She raised her other hand to rub at her eyes, only to wince as the remnants of smeared makeup stung.
And then came the voice on the other end.
"Ah, (Y/n). I didn't think you'd answer on the first call."
Her entire body locked up. Her pulse roared in her ears. Yuuto.
Every ounce of grogginess vanished in an instant, replaced by sheer panic. She slammed the phone down, her hand trembling violently as it left the receiver. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Her mind scrambled, piecing together every detail in a frantic spiral. How the hell did he know she was here?
Then it hit her like a gut punch- she had mentioned spending Halloween at this house right in front of him. Goddammit.
How the hell did he get the number? The thought buzzed in (Y/n)'s mind like static, relentless and maddening. She squeezed the phone in her hand, her pulse pounding in her ears.
The phone rang again, shrill and piercing in the stillness. Panic clawed its way up her throat, and she answered the call for a split second, just long enough to slam it down again with trembling hands. The last thing she needed was to wake Hayami or the kids.
She scanned the windows, checking that the blinds and curtains were securely shut. At least, if Yuuto was nearby, he couldn't see her... right?
The phone rang again, rattling her nerves. Her hand darted toward the cord, ready to rip it from the wall, but Souta's voice haunted her thoughts.
"More people are going to die. And that's going to be on you."
Her breath hitched, and her hand hovered over the phone. If I don't answer... what happens?
Swallowing thickly, she forced herself to pick up the phone, the receiver cold against her ear.
"Done throwing your fit?" Yuuto's voice slithered through the line, smug and venomous.
(Y/n)'s breath caught, and without thinking, she slammed the phone down again. Fuck him.
For a brief, fleeting moment, silence returned. She stood frozen, staring at the phone like it might come alive. Seconds stretched into a full minute, her heart hammering in her chest. Maybe that was it... Maybe he gave up.
