TW: MENTIONS OF S*ICIDE
The words hit (Y/n) like a punch to the gut.
Gone? The world seemed to blur around her. Aiko - her ex best friend, the person who had once been so integral to her life - was dead? (Y/n)'s mind reeled, trying to comprehend the enormity of what her mother was saying.
Her heart began to race as she gripped the bed's edge for stability. She had known something was wrong when Aiko hadn't come to visit, but this? She had missed her, yes, even after everything Aiko had done, but now? The regret and sadness collided within her like waves crashing against a shore.
"M-Mom... what do you mean?" (Y/n) managed to ask, her voice barely a whisper. "How...?"
(Y/n)'s mother took a deep, trembling breath, her body shaking with grief as she tried to wrap her mind around the devastating news. She had known Aiko since she was a baby, had watched her grow up, had seen her and (Y/n) form a bond so deep it felt unbreakable. Now that bond was severed forever. The thought made (M/n)'s chest tighten with sorrow.
"She- she killed herself," her mother choked out, her voice breaking as she buried her face in her hands. The weight of the words hung heavy in the air, suffocating.
(Y/n) sat there, numb. Suicide? That didn't sound like Aiko. It wasn't something she could ever have imagined. Her heart tightened painfully at the thought. Aiko... gone? It felt surreal, like a nightmare she couldn't wake up from. She blinked, her face blank, but her insides twisted in knots of confusion, regret, and disbelief.
"...You were on the phone with her mom?" the girl asked, her voice steady despite the turmoil raging within her. She didn't recognize the sound of her own words; it was like she was outside her body, watching herself from a distance. Nothing felt real anymore. The world around her had become a haze, and it was as though she was stuck in a state of perpetual dissociation, unable to fully grasp what was happening.
Her mother nodded, sniffing as fresh tears welled in her eyes. "Yeah... she called me frantic, saying she found her in her room... just h-hanging there-" The words came out in jagged pieces, her voice quivering as she relived the horrific conversation. She went pale as she spoke, her face contorting with grief.
(Y/n) chewed on her lip, her mind spinning. Hanging? She could hardly picture it. Aiko, who was always so full of life, her best friend who had been there through everything, now... gone in such a devastating, tragic way. And the more she thought about it, the more an overwhelming wave of guilt washed over her, drowning her in regret.
What if she hadn't gone to the rooftop that day? What if she had stayed and talked it out with Aiko instead of yelling at her? What if she hadn't ignored her in math class, or brushed her off when Aiko had clearly wanted to make things right? What if she had just... walked with her one last time?
Her mind was consumed with what-ifs, each one hitting her like a blow to the chest. She could feel her heartbeat pounding in her face, her pulse quickening as time seemed to stop. She'd never get the chance to make things right. She'd never get to talk to Aiko again, never get to hear her laugh, or see her smile. Those memories were all she had now.
Like a ghost, (Y/n) stood up slowly and crawled into her hospital bed, her movements mechanical, her face devoid of any emotion. She pulled the covers over her body, but she didn't feel the warmth. She felt nothing at all.
Internally, though, her heart hurt. She felt hollow, the ache of grief settling deep into her bones. Aiko and Taro- both gone. Just like that.
She stared up at the ceiling, the sterile smell of the hospital suddenly overwhelming her. Aiko's face, once vibrant with joy, now filled her mind in a way that made it hard to breathe. (Y/n)'s eyes stung with the tears she was too exhausted to cry, and as the weight of the loss consumed her, she couldn't help but wonder if there was anything - anything - she could've done to save her best friend.
