The two girls began their walk to school, the cool morning air swirling around them. (Y/n) kept stealing glances at Aiko, her mind spinning with the thoughts she had tried to shove away since last night. There's no way Aiko's behind those messages... right? It seemed ridiculous -impossible, even - but the seed of doubt had been planted. Every so often, she found herself wondering if it was true.
Lost in her thoughts, she almost missed it when Aiko broke the silence. "Who were you talking to?"
(Y/n) blinked, confused by the sudden question. "Huh?"
Aiko gave her a deadpan look, her dark eyes scrutinizing (Y/n) in a way that made her stomach twist. "I heard you talking to someone in the bathroom last night. Who were you talking to?"
She searched for something to say, and the first thing that came to mind slipped out. "I was talking to Asahi. He left his mic at my place and wanted to come over and get it back, but I told him I was busy hanging out with you."
It was a lie, and a bad one at that. Her throat felt tight as she spoke, and she instantly regretted it.
Aiko raised an eyebrow, her expression shifting to one of skepticism. "Asahi?" she echoed, her voice laced with doubt as she recalled Yuuto and his warning. "I don't trust him, (Y/n). And why does he have a mic at your place? Is it hooked up to his phone? How do you know he's not secretly listening to our conversations?"
(Y/n) stopped in her tracks, her hands coming up defensively. "Okay, for one, the microphone isn't even on. I checked. And secondly, it was for a school project. Where is all this coming from?"
As they neared the school, the tension between (Y/n) and Aiko thickened, simmering beneath the surface. Finally, Aiko broke the silence, her voice sharp with frustration. "You've been acting strange, (Y/n). First, you get a burner phone without telling me. Now, you got these new friends that I feel like you're replacing me with. When you asked me for a sleepover, I was excited, only to find out we were half babysitting, and then to overhear you talking to other people during our time together." Aiko paused, her voice softening, though the hurt was still clear. "I feel like I got my hopes up for nothing."
(Y/n) stopped walking and frowned, her heart sinking at her friend's words. "I'm sorry... I didn't know you felt that way. It's just... we've been friends for so long that I didn't think I needed to go all out. I thought that any time we spent together would be enough, you know?"
But Aiko wasn't swayed. She shook her head as they approached the front gates of the school. "You're deflecting." She turned to face (Y/n), grabbing her by the shoulders, her grip firm. "Those friends you're hanging out with - Yuuto, Keiji, Asahi, even Emi - they're bad news."
(Y/n) blinked, taken aback by the intensity in Aiko's gaze. "What are you talking about?"
Aiko's expression hardened, her eyes dark with warning. "You need to stay away from them. For your own good."
(Y/n) felt her chest tighten, the words hitting her harder than she expected. She shook Aiko's hands off her shoulders, dismayed by her friend's controlling tone. "You keep saying that, but you're not telling me why. You expect me to just drop them because you have a gut feeling?"
The frustration bubbled up inside her, a mix of confusion and hurt clouding her thoughts. Why is she doing this?
She took a deep breath, trying to collect herself. "Look, I'll talk to you later. I just... I need some space right now." Her voice wavered slightly as she spoke, but she knew she had to get away, if only to think clearly.
Aiko's eyes widened in disbelief, her lips pressing into a thin line. "Of course you'd say that," she muttered, almost under her breath.
Without another word, (Y/n) turned on her heel and walked into the school building, her footsteps heavy with unresolved tension. The two girls parted ways, the air between them thick with unspoken thoughts.
