She familiarized herself with the app, her eyes darting between the unfamiliar controls and the boy up front. Asahi's gaze stayed forward, only occasionally flicking to the rearview mirror, his teal eyes narrowed in concentration on the road. She angled herself just enough to keep the screen out of his sight, careful to make her movements subtle. Slowly, she worked through the app, her fingers brushing over each icon. One controlled the locks, another adjusted the windows, and yet another seemed to regulate the speed. If she played this right, she might just escape.
Her heart thundered at the thought, but her nerves were steel, her hands steady as she scrolled further, learning each command by sight. But, as luck would have it, just as she began plotting, the car lurched forward, its speed increasing without warning. She furrowed her brows and raised her head a fraction, hoping to keep the phone low enough to stay hidden. The sound of the engine droned louder, and as she squinted through the windshield, realization dawned. They were merging onto the highway.
Her pulse quickened, and her breaths came faster. She glanced back down at the phone screen, finger hovering over the unlock button. This is it, she thought, heart hammering in her chest. She had to make her move now or never. Taking one deep, grounding breath, she tapped the unlock button.
Instantly, Asahi's eyes darted to her, his expression snapping from calm to alarmed. "What the fu-" He slammed his hand on the door panel, repeatedly pressing the lock button, only for nothing to happen. Panic flickered across his face as he realized she'd taken control.
Taking advantage of his distraction, she swung the door open. The roar of the wind filled her ears, and she could feel the tug of the air pulling at her as the car barreled down the road, now hitting 50 miles per hour. She gritted her teeth, gripping the door tightly, feeling the wild rush of panic and adrenaline.
"(Y/N)-!" he shouted, reaching for her as he started to slow down, but she didn't give him the chance to finish. Without a second thought, she threw herself out of the car.
The moment she hit the asphalt, pain exploded across her body. Her shoulder took the brunt of the impact, the bone jolting painfully as she skidded across the rough, unforgiving surface. The road tore at her arms and legs, stripping the skin raw as she rolled, her entire body jarred by each brutal contact. She barely held onto the phone, her fingers scraping the ground as she tumbled, her head spinning and her vision blurring from the force.
Finally, her body came to a stop on the side of the road, aching and battered, her skin stinging where the pavement had torn it open. Her breaths came in shallow, pained gasps, and blood trickled down her elbows and knees, the cuts sharp and burning. Forcing herself to stay conscious, she tried to lift her head, fighting through the pain.
Disoriented, (Y/n) lay on the cold asphalt, trying to catch her breath as her body screamed in agony. Her left shoulder was throbbing, likely bruised or worse from taking the brunt of her fall. Blood trickled from her scraped elbows and knees, staining her skin and dress, and her hands stung with a mixture of fresh cuts and road rash. Her muscles felt shredded, her nerves alive with sharp pain that radiated through her arms and legs. Her vision blurred, and stars danced before her eyes, the aftermath of her reckless jump hitting her hard.
Gritting her teeth, she looked down at the phone in her shaking hand, her heart sinking as she saw the screen marred with a spiderweb of cracks. The display glitched and flickered, making it difficult to read. She swallowed down a rising tide of panic, fingers trembling as she hit the lock button again, hoping the car would stay sealed.
She glanced up just in time to see Asahi's car pulled over on the shoulder, swaying slightly as he struggled inside, attempting to force the doors open. They wouldn't budge. Relief mixed with a strange, hysterical laughter bubbled up inside her, escaping in a weak, breathy chuckle that felt almost out of place. She was still alive. Everything burned like fire, but at least she was alive.
