The tires screeched against the asphalt as Souta pushed the car harder, his grip unrelenting on the wheel. The night outside was pitch-black, only interrupted by the fleeting glow of passing streetlights and the sharp beam of Kai's headlights in the rearview mirror. Kai's car was right behind them, gaining with every turn and every lurch forward.
(Y/n)'s heart pounded against her ribcage, a suffocating panic tightening her chest. She clenched her fists in her lap, her bandaged hands trembling. Everything felt surreal, her head was swimming, like she wasn't even inside her body. The past hours flashed through her mind in jagged fragments: blood, pain, the bandages on her hands, the cold metal bed. She felt like she was drowning in it all.
In the rearview mirror, Kai's headlights blazed brighter. The car swerved violently to the left, bumping into the back corner of Souta's vehicle. The jolt sent their car skidding sideways, tires screeching in protest as Souta fought to regain control.
"Fucking hell, Kai!" Souta growled through clenched teeth, throwing the car back into alignment. His knuckles were white against the wheel, and the engine whined as he slammed his foot on the accelerator again.
But Kai wasn't letting up. He was driving like a madman, as if he didn't care if they both went off the road.
Kai's car roared from behind, swerving sharply into the left lane. He pulled up beside them, so close (Y/n) could see the glint of his furious eyes through the windshield- cold, determined, and unhinged.
Her stomach twisted violently as if gravity had inverted, her body sinking deep into the seat. Kai jerked the wheel toward them, and their car jolted to the side, wheels scraping the edge of the road.
"Hold on!" Souta shouted, but (Y/n) couldn't respond. She was too deep in her own head, drowning in a storm of terror.
Every muscle in her body screamed to run, to escape, to wake up and realize this was some sick dream. But the world outside the windows was real. Too real. The bandages on her hands burned against her skin, and her breath hitched as she imagined what would happen if Kai caught up to them.
What would Kai do if he dragged her back? What if this never ended?
Souta swerved hard to avoid a curve in the road. The tires barely gripped the pavement, and for a terrifying moment, the car tilted like it would flip. (Y/n) let out a sharp gasp, her body jerking forward against the seatbelt.
Kai's car wasn't far behind. It weaved recklessly across both lanes, scraping against the guardrails without a care. Sparks flew as metal ground against metal, but Kai didn't even hesitate, he just kept coming, kept chasing.
He didn't care if they crashed. He didn't care if he died. He just wanted to stop them.
Souta cursed under his breath, slamming the gas harder. The car shot forward, but Kai matched him effortlessly, driving like a man possessed.
Souta jerked the wheel hard to the right, narrowly dodging a tree that loomed out of the darkness. The car veered off the road and onto a gravel path, the tires skidding and kicking up stones in their wake.
"Almost there," Souta muttered, more to himself than to her. But (Y/n) barely heard him. Her mind was spinning, trapped between the present and every nightmare she had just survived.
A jolt rocked the car again; Kai had rammed them from behind, harder this time. The impact sent (Y/n) slamming against the door, her head bouncing against the window. Pain bloomed at her temple, stars dancing in her vision.
Her breathing hitched, coming out in ragged, uneven gasps. The edges of her vision blurred, and for a moment, she thought she might pass out again. But the terror kept her awake, kept her painfully aware of every second ticking by.
