And just as fast as it came, the weekend slipped away in a blink. (Y/n) sat at the edge of the couch, dreading the school day ahead. Every fiber of her being was debating on just staking it out at home, but the sharp honk outside jolted her from her thoughts.
Curious, she shuffled over to the window and peered through the curtains. Her brows furrowed at the sight of a sleek black car parked just outside. Souta's car. What's he doing here? she thought, slinging her backpack over her shoulder.
After locking the front door behind her, the girl made her way toward the car. As she approached, the locks clicked open. She hesitated for just a second, then reached for the handle, pulling open the door. The cool morning air rushed inside, carrying the scent of wet pavement and pine needles, but it was quickly overpowered by the unmistakable aroma of a new car.
Sliding into the passenger seat, she glanced sideways at Souta. His sharp purple eyes locked onto hers, unwavering.
"Close the door," he said, adjusting the heater by a degree. "You're letting all the cold air in."
(Y/n) clicked the door shut and leaned back against the seat, still stunned. Something about his presence felt surreal. She couldn't stop the question from slipping out. "What are you doing here?"
Without missing a beat, Souta shifted the car into drive and pulled away from the curb, the smooth hum of the engine filling the silence. "I'm driving you to school," he replied, eyes fixed on the road ahead.
(Y/n) swallowed, her backpack resting against her legs on the floorboard. "I see that... I'm just surprised."
Souta's jaw clenched for a brief moment, his next words so soft they barely made it past the hum of the engine. "I've never driven to school alone before."
The weight of his statement sank into (Y/n) like a stone, and guilt flooded her. Great, nice one. "Oh-" she stammered, her mind scrambling for the right response, but nothing came. How do you even respond to something like that?
After a beat of silence, she tried to pivot. "Well... thanks for the ride. Are you sure you're ready to go back to school?" Her voice trailed off as she shifted her gaze out the window, watching as familiar streets blurred past.
Souta exhaled deeply, the sound heavy with exhaustion. "I don't have much choice. My father wouldn't allow me to skip."
The (h/c) haired girl's brows knit together as she glanced back at him. "How would he even know if you didn't show?"
"The school would call the assistant," he replied flatly, like it was the most obvious thing in the world.
"Oh. Right." She mentally kicked herself. Rich people problems.
The rest of the ride was steeped in silence. (Y/n) tried, more than once, to spark some sort of conversation, but every time she opened her mouth, the words died on her tongue. And anyway, Souta looked... rough.
Sure, on the surface he appeared well-put-together, dressed as though he were heading to a photoshoot. But his face told a different story. Heavy bags hung beneath his eyes, and his usually bright complexion was now a shade paler. His cheeks were a little more hollowed out like he hadn't eaten or slept properly in days.
(Y/n) felt an ache in her chest, an urge to say something - anything - to comfort him. But that comfort seemed just out of reach, tangled up with the memory of Reina, a subject too painful to bring up.
So, she kept her lips pressed together, her hands fidgeting idly with the strap of her backpack as the car rolled to a stop in front of the school.
The engine quieted, leaving only the soft ticking of the cooling metal in its wake. For a moment, neither of them moved.
