(Y/n) sat at her desk in the art room, staring at her portrait of Mao with glazed-over eyes. Despite the peaceful atmosphere, her mind was far from calm. The (h/c)-haired girl could barely focus, her thoughts tangled with everything going on- Aiko, the strange texts, the letter. The more she tried to concentrate on her drawing, the more it seemed to fall apart under her gaze.
Hayami, sitting beside her, seemed to notice. The brunette's sympathetic look didn't go unnoticed by (Y/n), who tried her best to offer a strained smile in return.
"Already done with your portrait?" (Y/n) asked, her voice flat as she gestured toward the drawing in front of Hayami. The girl in question glanced down at her own drawing and nodded. Then, her eyes drifted over to (Y/n)'s sketch of Mao, her expression softening. Despite (Y/n) having worked on it during detention the day before, the sketch looked... worse. The lines were rough, the shading incomplete, and the essence of the portrait seemed lost, as if the focus just wasn't there.
Letting out a quiet sigh, Hayami slid her completed portrait of Emi to the side of (Y/n)'s desk and reached for a fresh piece of paper. Without a word, she started to draw again, this time with a playful smirk on her face.
(Y/n) furrowed her brows, watching the new sketch take shape. "What are you doing?" she asked, her voice a mix of curiosity and mild frustration.
Hayami's smirk widened. "I want you to see how silly you look right now," she said, her tone teasing but gentle.
(Y/n) glanced at the forming sketch and realized with a start that it was her. Hayami was drawing her, distracted, lost in thought, with a frown on her face. Despite the playful nature of the sketch, it hit a little too close to home. (Y/n) tried to smile, but it didn't reach her eyes. Her mind was still plagued by the weight of everything she'd been trying to ignore.
Trying to shake off her thoughts, (Y/n) decided to steer the conversation in a direction that might lighten the mood. She leaned her cheek into the palm of her hand and asked, "How was your lunch with Emi? Besides when I intruded."
At the mention of Emi, Hayami's smile widened, and her eyes brightened as she continued to sketch. She traced the outlines of (Y/n) with a light hand, the strokes fluid and confident. "It was... magical," Hayami admitted, her voice softening as she spoke. "I feel like I'm in her inside circle, as stupid as that sounds."
(Y/n) hummed in response, glancing down at Hayami's finished portrait of Emi. The drawing was beautiful, capturing Emi's sharp features and confident aura perfectly.
"She treated me like a human!" Hayami continued, her excitement bubbling over. "Best part- she complimented my perfume. I went out shopping all day yesterday, and turns out the hard work paid off."
(Y/n) let out a small hum of acknowledgment, though her heart wasn't fully in the conversation. "I'm glad things went well," she said quietly, her eyes drifting back to her own portrait.
Hayami paused for a moment, sensing the weight in (Y/n)'s words. She studied her friend's face, the way (Y/n)'s shoulders slumped just slightly, as if she was carrying something heavy.
"Hey," Hayami said softly, her teasing tone fading. "You know, if something's bothering you, you can talk to me."
(Y/n) could tell that her friend was referring to Aiko. Their conversation at lunch was rushed, and it probably left Hayami with more questions than answers. But answering those questions right now wasn't her priority.
Instead, she forced another smile, this one a little more genuine than before. "I know," she said, her voice soft. "Thanks, Hayami."
(Y/n) looked up from her desk just in time to notice Souta approaching. He moved with easy confidence, hands tucked casually in his pockets as he strolled over to where she and Hayami sat. His gaze landed on Emi's portrait that lay in front of her, one brow arching as he studied it.
