Reina stood in her bathroom, staring at the showerhead as cold water splattered into the tub. She let out a frustrated sigh, turned the handle, and the water came to a halt with a hollow hiss. Still freezing. Shaking her head, she stepped out of the bathroom, wrapping her robe tighter around her. She wasn't about to suffer through an ice-cold shower.

Exiting her bedroom, she descended the creaky staircase, her feet light as they carried her toward the living room. From the archway, she found Asahi and Yuuto seated on the couch, huddled together in their usual way. Asahi lounged lazily, his gray hair falling into his eyes, while Yuuto, with his sharp yellow gaze, was in the middle of whispering something that seemed like a scolding. Typical.

Yuuto's yellow eyes flickered toward Reina, catching her gaze. "Do you think one of you guys could check the water heater?" she asked, her voice edging toward irritation. The last thing she wanted was to deal with it herself, but she also didn't want to shower in the arctic.

Asahi didn't bother turning to her. Instead, he lazily raised his hand and flipped her off. Reina narrowed her eyes, rolling them in response. "Do it yourself," Yuuto dismissed her, not even bothering to hide his annoyance before turning back to Asahi, clearly mid-lecture.

Reina scoffed, peeling away from the archway. Of course. She was always on her own when it came to things like this. Brushing it off, she walked past the kitchen doorway, her steps slowing slightly as she noticed Keiji. He was humming a tune under his breath, headphones firmly clamped over his ears while he busied himself at the stove, seemingly preparing a dish of (f/f). Thank God he's not making meatloaf again.

He didn't seem to notice Reina as she passed by, engrossed in his cooking. She considered saying something, maybe asking him about the water heater, but decided against it. Keiji, for all his surprising intelligence, wasn't exactly the best with house repairs either. Besides, it looked like he was in a good mood, and she wasn't in the mood to sour it with complaints.

Instead, Reina made her way toward the door near the kitchen entrance. The basement. The idea of trudging down there to deal with the water heater by herself wasn't exactly appealing, but she had little choice. If she wanted a hot shower, she had to take matters into her own hands. Opening it revealed a long, dark staircase leading into the basement. A draft of cold air immediately rushed up to greet her, and she stifled a shiver. She hit the light switch near the top, illuminating the stairs in a dim glow as she descended to the lower level.

The basement wasn't used much, and it showed. The lights were dull, casting uneven shadows on the unfinished ceiling above, where wires and pipes were exposed, crisscrossing like veins beneath the skin of the house. On the wall was the breaker, the poor box dusted and looking like it would fall off any second now. Concrete floors stretched beneath her, and large metal support poles dotted the space, holding the weight of the floors above. Cobwebs draped themselves in every corner, collecting dust and signaling just how long it had been since anyone ventured down there.

The room was modest given the size of the house- primarily a storage space cluttered with old furniture, cardboard boxes, and shelves stuffed with random knick-knacks Yuuto and Keiji couldn't be bothered to throw out. Two doors along the far wall led to more furnished rooms: a small den Yuuto sometimes used for projects and a storage room where Keiji kept his more dangerous chemical experiments. He always claimed it was in the name of "food science!" Whatever that was supposed to mean.

However, it was the colder area of the basement that always unsettled Reina. Off to the right, near the far wall was another door, and inside stood an old walk-in deep freezer. The metal looked rusted and worn, its once-white exterior dulled to a dirty gray. The air in that part of the basement was colder- unnaturally so, almost as if the chill clung to the walls themselves. She never liked going in that room.
