When Remus Lupin woke up the morning of November 1st, he could feel something rattling his bones and shaking his chest. He had been startled awake at exactly 1:11 am, his heart racing like a maniac in his chest.
He pulled himself out of the tiny cot he had been sleeping in, still able to hear the roar of the party in the bar that was downstairs.
He looked to see Kingsley's cot was empty, and deciding he couldn't sleep anyways he pulled on his brown leather jacket, deciding to get some fresh air.
It was unusual for him to wake up like that in the middle of the night. He was a heavy sleepier, the type of heavy sleepier you would need ten alarm clocks to wake up. Though something was tugging at him, and he couldn't explain it except for the fact it felt as if something was whispering in his ear that everything wasn't alright.
He made it to the street, taking a deep breath of cold crisp northern air, letting it fill his lungs. When he saw Kingsley rushing towards him, Remus could feel his heart drop before the man even said anything.
Something was seriously wrong.
He could tell by the way the man's eyes jumped around, trying to avoid his. He could tell by the way his eyes seemed to be wide and alarmed.
And mostly, Remus could tell because his insides felt cold, as if was a piece of rock on the back side of the moon, never able to see the sun.
"Emergency order meeting, Dumbledore's just sent for us," Kingsley muttered, rummaging around in his pockets.
"What is it?" Remus asked, his whole body tense. When the man did answer, Remus reached forward gripping his arm, forcing him to look him in the eyes. "Kingsley what is it?"
It was when this brave man's eyes began to swim with tears, as he looked at Remus with pity upon more pity, shaking his head, that Remus knew.
"I'm so sorry Lupin," Kingsley began, and now it was Remus who was shaking his head, his mouth agap as he was waiting for the man to finally say it. "Aveline's dead, they found her body in godrics hallows."
Even if they weren't technically together, everyone who knew Remus Lupin and Aveline Rosier could see the type of connection they had. It was the type of connection that the universe only gives you once— a love so consuming that anymore then that it would drive you mad. She was his soul— the part of him that lit up his life in a way where things didn't seem so horrid and daunting. And he was hers— the part of her that wrapped around in her effortless never ending comfort.
Aveline Rosier had left the earth with part of his still tethered, ripping out part of him as she took her final breath. Remus could feel it, a black hole in his chest sucking in everything around.
His Aveline, his sun, was gone
Remus couldn't even hear what Kingsley was saying, the man reached out and rubbing his shoulder, no doubt trying to console him. All he wanted to do was scream. Scream at heavens with part of his heart hanging out of his chest, for how could they take her from him.
How could they rip away from him the one thing that made life worth living?
So he did scream. A gut wrenching scream that made Kingsley— one of the bravest aurors in the business— flinch. It was hoarse, coming from his gut as he kicked a trash can laying on the side of the road.
And he screamed and screamed and screamed, till his throat physically couldn't take it anymore. Raw with his pain and heavy with the rift in his soul.
Only then, did he stop, letting his knees drop to the cold fall ground, his hands gripping his hair, pulling at if as if he was trying to wake himself up from a horrible dream.
"Lupin," Kingsley tried again softly, a hand placed on the man's back. After a moment of hesitation he continued. "You should know the Dark Lord is gone, she took him out with her."
The words should've made him feel better— the rational part of his mind knew that. Though in this moment Remus couldn't have cared less. For of course she did.
For that was Aveline. She was selfless, and brave, and kind, and powerful, and smart— and in this moment Remus cursed her for being so perfect.
Why couldn't she just run and hide like anyone else? Keep her head down and cower in the corner?
Remus didn't care if ten Dark Lord's controlled the earth, as long as he had her by his side to hold.
"I don't fucking care," Remus muttered, as hot tears came steaming down his face. "I don't fucking care," he repeated to himself, squeezing his head.
He would bring the Dark Lord back if it meant bringing her back, and he wasn't even ashamed to admit it.
He screamed again, letting his whole body lay across the concrete and the coldness inch its way into his body.
He would've lain there forever if Kingsley hadn't eventually forced him up.
He would've lain there till his body became one with the concrete ash beneath him, and vines began to crawl over his bones. Until his chest stopped heaving and his heart stopping beating.
He could've lain there till he saw her sweet face again, and could touch the soft skin on her cheeks.
Till he could smell her confront scent, and hold her warm body.
Till the heavens claimed him as theirs, and finally reunited him with his darling Aveline.
