It was exactly 4 months later, when Remus was getting ready for a relaxing evening of grading more papers and perhaps drinking one too many fire whiskeys, when his chamber door erupted open without as much of a knock.
He raised his wand on instinct, to see the panicked face of James Potter, holding a very familiar look of paper in his hands.
The Marauders Map.
"James! what's going on? Is everything okay?" Remus exclaimed, moving towards his friend.
"Wormtail. Harry. Sirius," James panted, pointing to the map.
"Where did you get this?" Remus asked, grabbing it out of his hands and looking to where James was pointed.
"It was in Harry's stuff when he came home for christmas. I don't mind him having it but I forgot— actually nevermind that. LOOK!"
Sure enough, there the names of Harry Potter, and Hermione Granger heading down the whomping willow tunnel towards the shrieking shack.
Without missing a beat, both men took off running.
_____Remus and James moved as a unit. Quickly freezing the willow with a charm, and sprinting down the tunnel as they had many times in their youth.
They heard a scream, which only made them run faster and faster till their legs were practically on fire.
Remus didn't waste anytime, practically kicking open the door when they arrived.
Remus certainly wasn't expecting the scene laid out infront of him.
A fallen and bloody Ron Weasley, clutching a rat between his fingers, an angered and slightly scratched up Harry and Hermione, who stood defensively in front of their fallen friend.
But what was most shocking, was the site of a man who looked like a ragged skeleton with very familiar blue eyes dressed in torn, grey rags.
"Sirius," Remus muttered under his breathe.
"Padfoot!" James exclaimed.
And for the first time in just over 12 years, 3 out of the five marauders embraced.
Of course they had no one way of knowing it, but with her arms tucked around James and Sirius, Aveline Rosier joined in on the embrace.
She was there. She was always there.
"Look at them," Aveline cried to Tessie. "They are together and alive."
Even Tessie seemed slightly moved by the show of affection, watching as the old friends chatted with a very confused and shattered looking Harry.
Aveline watched her three friends, standing together, and felt her heart melt, as if she was a well of tears finally ready to spring.
And for just a moment, Aveline Rosier flickered.
"Did you see that?" Hermione Granger gasped, pointing to the corner of the room. "There was a woman. A blonde woman. Standing in the corner for a second."
Everyone exchanged confused looks.
"Merlin Mione," Ron groaned. "How hard did you hit your head?"
Aveline whirled around to face Tessie.
"What just happened? I flickered and she saw me?"
There was a distant look in Tessie's eyes, her usually funny and goofy persona replaced with a solemness
"Must've been a trick of the light. That's all," Tessie grumbled, clearly wanting to drop the subject
But Aveline couldn't drop the subject.
Hermione had seen her. She knew it.
Aveline wanted to keep pressing Tessie for answers, but the commotions in the shrieking shack drew her attention.
There was Severus Snape barging in, Peter Pettigrew being forced out of his animagus, and a series of spells being thrown that made Aveline briefly forget about the flicker.
She watched as the group dragged an unconscious Severus Snape out the whomping willow tunnel, and a tied up Peter Pettigrew.
Aveline sneered at Peter. His greasy hair and plump figure— this prick was the reason she was dead.
She tried to press Tessie again about the flicker, and Tessie brushed her off saying Hermione was just seeing things.
But with her entire heart Aveline knew— Hermione had seen her, if only it was just for a moment.
_____
Time worked differently in the spirit world, or the other side, or whatever the correct terminology is for the world of souls.
One minute Aveline was watching her friends drag Peter and Snape under the moonlight, and the next moment the world around her was swirling, like she was in a smudged water painting.
The winds in the spirit world sort of just, blew her where she needed to be most.
Time wasn't really a thing that was linear or could be explained.
Things just sort of happened.
When the world eventually stopped swirling Aveline Rosier was standing above the pale looking bodies of Harry Potter and Sirius Black.
She gasped, a blurred mirage covering their faces and their bodies lurched upwards.
Her eyes flickered to the sky, dementors floating above them.
They were dying.
Aveline was watching their souls be taken.
Without thinking, she threw her bodies over theirs.
And immediately she started to scream bloody murder.
"Aveline!" Tessie yelled, dropping to her knees beside her. "Aveline stop!! Dementors can also take the souls of spirits. Except they aren't just taking your soul, they are breaking you apart."
Aveline heard the words hit her ears, but she didn't move. Clutching Sirius and Harry as if they were her lifeboats.
"They are dying," she managed to choke to Tessie.
"And you're disappearing."
There wasn't many times in their many years of adventures Tessie used her powers. As Aveline's technical guide in the spirit world, Tessie has control over Aveline.
Though as she watched Aveline's soul began to slowly and surely be sucked up by the dementors, she snapped, grabbing Aveline's wrist and apparating them away with a pop!
