A vanilla scented candle flickered in the light of Remus's office, filling the small space with its scent. The only sound was the soft scratching of his quill against the parchament as he graded student papers.
It was relaxing actually, taking his mind to a place he could do easily get lost in.
He hummed under his breathe, only breaking his concentration when an eager knock sounded on his door. It was late, the moon glaring at him from outside his office window— so Remus was very uncertain why a knock was coming at this time.
He opened the door to see Mcgonagall, standing there with her wand out, and a cross expression.
"Sirius Black has entered the castle. Slashed the Pink lady portrait. Full castle search. Get your wand."
She turned her back and swept away, leaving Remus to stumble after her.
"W-what?" Remus said, jogging to keep up with her. "Sirius was here?"
The woman nodded, her expression hard to read. Suddenly she paused, an even more serious look in her eyes and she turned to face Remus.
"Remus it'll do you good to stick by side and lay low. Give no one reason to believe you had a hand in this, do you understand me Mr. Lupin?"
Remus swallowed a nervous lump in his throat. "Y-yes ma'am."
She narrowed her eyes, "Don't ma'am me Lupin."
Minvera led them to where Dumbledore and Snape stood in hushed conversation.
Upon seeing him, Severus's nose upturned into such a sneer, Remus was certain it was going to get stuck that way. They fell silent as Remus approached.
" Remus, Minvera," Dumbledore greeted with a nod of the head. "Remus if you could secure the east wing, Minvera the west, Severus the upper floors. If you see or hear anything, report back."
Remus nodded, rushing off with his wand drawn, no questions asked.
His heart was beating fast, but not out of fear there was a murderer in the building. He was scared for Sirius.
He rushed off, his thoughts moving a million miles a second, ignoring the many whispering clumps of students he passed.
The east wing of the castle was empty, the only sound Remus's feet hitting the marble floor. The moonlight greeted him through the stone pillars, following his every step.
Then he saw it.
The brush of a black tail whipping around the corner.
Remus hesitated. Maybe he was just seeing things. Though he picked up his pace till he was running, careful, slow steps.
There it was again. A wolf looking black dog. Remus watched as the animal rounded the corner, bounding off across the grounds towards the forbidden forest.
Well Fuck.
"Remus!" A voice called, and Remus turned around to see James running towards him.
Except this wasn't scruffy, mad looking James, this was James Potter the auror.
He was dressed in all black, his scruffy beard shaven to a clean look, his hair trimmed and auror bad shining and pinned to his chest.
"James? What are you doing here?"
He pointed to the badge on his chest, "auror duties. Where is he? Did you see him?"
Remus paused, eyeing James carefully.
"There was a black dog who just ran into the forbidden forest," Remus finally whispered, in a tone so low and slow James had to strain his ears to hear.
