The sound of Remus ever so slightly snoring was all Aveline could hear. It was a comforting sound, but it also told him he was fast asleep while she was up tossing and turning in her bed.
Sometimes at night when her head bit the pillow, Aveline's brain was so electric it bounced around all sorts of thoughts at a rapid pace.
You can only toss and turn so much when someone else is in the bed, so worried she was going to wake Remus up, Aveline carefully snuck out of the room.
What she really needed was a cigarette, and luckily she knew James study had packages sitting on his desk. After stealing a pack, she threw on a coat and a pair of Lily's old sandals, and found herself sneaking up stairs to one of the spare bedrooms with a window that led to the roof.
This is something they did all the time as teenagers— take to the roof for a cigarette when the Potter parents went to bed. She knew it was a bit silly. She was a full grown adult. She could walk out the front door and have a cigarette on the porch if she wanted.
But there was something magical about the roof.
The cold night air felt like heaven to her lungs and overactive brain. She was eager for the taste of a cigarette to soon be on her lips.
Though it appeared as if someone else had gotten to her spot before her.
"Sirius?" Aveline asked, shutting the window behind her.
The man was wearing his leather jacket, head pointed to the sky cigarette dangling between his fingers.
"Ave!" He greeted excitedly, though there was a tiredness to his tone. "What are you doing out here?"
She nodded to box in her hand, "Same thing you're doing."
Sirius snorted, turning his head back to the stairs.
"Stole those from James's office did you?" he asked.
Aveline laughed, "How'd you know?"
Sirius pulled an identical box from his jacket pocket.
"I did the same thing. I do it all the time," Sirius told her with a chuckle, "Poor lad thinks he goes through smokes at a rapid pace. Over the summer he nearly ripped Harry's head off thinking it had been him stealing the cigarettes."
Aveline made her way next to Sirius, sitting beside her friend and lighting one of James's cigarettes between her fingers.
"Did you come clean?" Aveline asked, taking a long much needed draw.
"Nah," Sirius shrugged, "James is so funny when he gets all worked up. I told Harry though. Kid nearly hexed me into oblivion."
Aveline couldn't help but laugh at the image of it all.
James was rather funny when he got mad.
"How are you doing Aveline?" Sirius asked, flicking his cigarette on the roof and stomping it out with the edge of his boot. He pulled another one from the package, lighting it with a flick of his finger.
Sirius always had a different way of being when it was the two of them.
He was still himself. Though he was the toned down version. The guard down version.
He never pretended with Aveline. If he was in a bad mood, he was in a bad mood.
It was one of the things she loved most about her relationship with Sirius, and she was glad to see time hadn't changed it.
