I jumped out of the well, grabbed my school bag and took off at a full sprint towards home. It was late, so I knew I'd have to sneak in as best I could. The only problem with sneaking in is everyone must be asleep otherwise it doesn't work. So, I turned myself human and walked through the front door. Mom walked out of the kitchen and ran to me. "You're home. We were so worried. What happened?" Mom asked. I did the only thing I could do, unfortunately, I lied. I told her this wild story about getting sidetracked on my way to school last week. My clothing made it more believable, but not as much as I had hoped. "I'm just glad you're safe." Mom stated. "Yeah."
I didn't get much sleep that night, but lucky for me I was used to it. So, got up and got ready for school and left with Ayumi. The only problem was I couldn't focus on my studies, I was just too distracted. Things had changed in an instant and I really didn't give myself time to process. So, there was, in the middle of math class zoned out until the bell rang. I sighed as Ayumi and I left class with Yuka and Eri. "Are you okay, Kaya?" Ayumi asked. "Yeah, you've been acting weird all day," Yuka added. I responded with a smile, "I'm fine. I just got my memories back and I've been trying to sort them out is all." All three girls gasped in unison. "So, do you remember everything from when you were little?" Eri asked as we walked home. "Yeah." I stated. "That's good. I'm happy for you." Ayumi said, smiling. We continued talking until we parted ways. Ayumi pulled me into a hug when we reached our street. "What was that for?" I asked with a slight giggle. "I just thought you might need one, plus you were gone a week. I missed my sister." After that, we headed home for the night. I'm happy I have Ayumi and the others, I don't know what I'd do without them.
I decided to stay in the present until Friday evening, which was about four days. I didn't know what I was going to say to mom and Ayumi to explain where I was going. I'd have to come up with something but I wasn't sure what, just yet. It hit me while I was at archery practice Thursday afternoon. Archery competition. Even though I wasn't an official member of the team, they still let me tag along to competitions as a stand-in; so, the idea was perfect. Surprisingly enough, when Friday rolled around, my plan worked, and I was able to leave without a hitch. Leaving the present was the easy part, returning to the past was harder. I wasn't quite ready to be me again. I actually enjoyed being 'human' and being with my friends, but I knew deep down I didn't belong in the present. The present was a place without demons and was a lot safer than the past, comparatively speaking. That's why I belonged in the past, not only because its where I was born but because its where people like me were. We are literally a thing of the past and yet, I didn't want to be there. Maybe someday I'll figure it out, but for right now my home is the future.
