Chapter 39: The Fox and the Hound

I awoke to the sound of voices coming my way. "Are you sure it's her blood?" "I'm sure, it's her blood." The voices sounded distorted in my head, so I couldn't tell exactly who was speaking. Everything felt foggy and out of focus, so when I went to sit up, I fell face-first out of the tree. While I was on the ground, I heard someone say my name. I mumbled, but it was muffled by the ground. I felt someone pick me up bridal style. I looked towards the person's face, but my vision was too blurry to make out any features. It wasn't long before my consciousness slipped away.

I woke up to the sound of voices again, but this time my mind was clear. "Where am I?" I didn't realize I had said it out loud. "You're in the Village of Half-Demons. You're safe now, Kaya." Ryu replied. "How did I get here?" I asked, sitting up. He explained, "I smelled the scent of your blood while I was on a hunt and came looking for you. When I found you, you had a small pool of blood forming underneath you. So, I picked you up and brought you here." "Oh, so it was your voice I heard. Thank you." I stated, quietly. Ryu smiled and I felt him grab my hand. "You had me worried." I looked down. "I'm sorry I worried you. I didn't want this to happen." Ryu let out a sigh before speaking. "What did you expect to happen?" His question caught me off guard, what exactly did I expect to happen while working for Naraku? "Kaya, I'm glad to see you're awake. How do you feel?" Hiroshi inquired as he entered the hut. "I've been worse." I said with a smirk. The conversation became a lot lighter hearted after that. Hiro explained what had happened in the village. I just listened, happy to be alive.

For the past few days, I helped the villagers with whatever they would let me do. Ryu protested the entire time, refusing to let me do anything on my own. Not that I minded, it was nice being able to spend time with him. He walked with me to the edge of the forest that surrounded the village, when I left this morning. We hugged and told each other to be safe before I departed.
