"I'd come for you, no one but you."
- I'd come for you, Daughtry
"What is this place?" I ask as we all limp to the house in the middle of nowhere. I stay in the back behind Steve and walk up the wooden porch.
"Safe house?" Tony says. I'd rather know more about what's in there. I can sense three, maybe four minds in there, one of them is extremely blurry, only vague images.
Clint and Nat go in first, everyone else steps in but I'm a little more skeptic. I peek inside, it looks rather.... Homey. I step inside and walk around the corner next to Steve.
"Honey?" Clint ask. Honey? "I'm home." His voice rings around the house. There are toys everywhere. This must be his home. I wasn't aware any of the avengers had children, apparently the rest of them weren't either. I would've thought having kids was a liability, a weakness.
A woman with long brown hair steps around the corner and embraces Clint. "We have company, sorry I didn't call ahead." He apologizes. She smiles and kisses him.
"This is an agent of some kind." Tony mutters.
"Gentleman, and lady," He glances at me. "This is laura." He introduces us.
"I know all of your names." She says a bit embarrassed.
I'd be more concerned that she knows who I am, but I notice her stomach. She's definitely pregnant. Now I know what that blurry mind was. I wasn't even aware I could see into an infant's mind, it's so pure, so innocent, it feels warm.
Two other small children run in from nowhere and run straight to Clint. One boy and a smaller girl. "Daddy!"
"Hi sweetheart, hey buddy!" He picks up the girl and hugs the boy.
"These are smaller agents." Tony jokes.
"Did you bring auntie Nat?" The small girl asks.
"Why don't you hug her and find out?" Nat says playfully. Making herself visible to the little girl.
Natasha acting this way towards the child makes me look at her quite differently. Back in Washington she was just the Russian assassin who I tried to kill. Clint looks different too, they both look like parents.
"Sorry for barging in on you." Steve apologizes.
"We would've called ahead but we were busy having no idea you existed." Tony says, obviously wanting an explanation.
"Yeah, Fury helped me set this up when I first joined. Kept it out S.H.I.E.L.D.'s files, I'd like to keep it that way." He says. "I figure it's a good place to lay low."
I wonder how long this laying low is taking place. Ultron is still out there and they wanna stop and take a nap while other people are dying.
I hear a crunching noise next to me and look down. Thor's foot has stepped on some children's logos and crushed what looked like a small house. Steve and I look at him and he slyly kicks the evidence under the coffee table. The child notices him and gives him a tiny mad glare for crushing her toy. I almost wanna laugh at him.
Thor look around and suddenly walks out. I look at Steve and nod, and he chases after him. The infants thought's keep distracting my mind and I walk over to Clint's wife.
She seems a bit concerned with my appearance and I remove my mask to try and make her more comfortable. I set it down on a nearby table and my gaze is fixed on her stomach. Everyone stops what they're doing to look at me. I wouldn't have brought my weapons inside if I'd known who lived here.
