I woke up to a light room and the sound of a women speaking about the destruction of the Safe Haven. I looked around the room, the sunlight burning my eyes. Where was I? I thought. Other sounds started to bleed through. It started with the soft beep of the heart monitor, then the pid pad of shoes outside my door. My eyes wandered to the ceiling and then the doorway.
"Morning," A voice cooed from behind me. I slowly turned toward to the window to see little Lisa bouncing up and down in excitement. I looked past her to see Jack sitting on the windowsill couch.
"She wanted to come see you," Jack said, smiling, I laughed a bit.
"Good morning, Lisa," I said as lightheartedly as I could. I closed my eyes again and let out a long sigh.
"Ev?" Lisa asked.
"Yeah, Lisa?" I replied.
"Are you and Mark married?" She asked, her little kid voice, giggling.
"Lisa..." Jack started.
"No, no... Jack, I can answer," I said, opening my eyes. I turned to her.
"So are you?" She said, bouncing eagerly for my answer.
"Mark and I are not married, but..." I said, looking side to side.
"But what? But what!" She said.
"But, Mark and I are in love, do you know what that means?" I asked her, smiling.
"...No," She replied.
"Well, being in love is when your heart races everytime you see them. You love them so much that you don't want anything bad to happen to them," I replied to her, tapping her nose with my finger.
"So, will you and Mark get married?" She asked curiously.
"Someday, Lisa," I said. She jumped up and down giggling.
"Can I please be the flower girl?" She giggled.
"Of course," I smiled. She squealed and ran back to Jack, who merely smiled at the girl running around his legs. I sat up slowly, wincing through the entire process.
"Where's Mark?" I asked.
"He's in the room next door," Jack replied, "He's not awake yet,"
I placed my head on the wall behind me and let out a pained sigh.
"Is he..." I said, my voice cracking in tears, "Is he okay?"
"He got quite a few burns, but he should be fine," I closed my eyes, trying not to show my tears.
"How bad are they?" I asked, still trying not to cry.
"Uh, they said he'll have some scarring," Jack replied calmly.
"C....Can I see him?" I stuttered out.
"Y-ya, I can go get a nurse," Jack said. He walked out of the room calling someone over. A nurse came into the room.
"What can I do for you?" She asked
"Can I see Mark?" I asked.
"Oh, yes of course," She said helping my up and out of the bed. Lisa was skipping around me in circles.
When we made it to the door I shoved it open and went in as quickly as I could. I fell onto the bed and buried my head in Mark's chest, gripping his T-shirt. I was sobbing, tears rushing down my face.
"Ev?" I heard a rough voice say. I looked up to see Mark's half opened eyes.
"Mark, oh my gosh," I said wrapping my arms around him. I felt his hands wrap around my back.
"Mark," Lisa cooed, "Are you and Ev married?"
"Lisa!" Jack said playfully. Lisa giggled and then ran out of the room, Jack playfully jogging out of the room after her. Mark laughed weakly.
"Married, huh?" Mark laughed.
"She asked me the same question," I laughed in return.
"Well, let me start by saying thank you for dragging me out of that," Mark said.
"I couldn't let you die, I couldn't live with myself if you did," I replied, laying my head flat on his chest.
"And married?" Mark said bringing the conversation up yet again.
"I guess so," I looked back up at him.
"Well, I guess Lisa's got big plans for us," I giggled. We sat in silence for a bit.
"If you wanted to get married," Mark started, "Would you?"
"Yes," I said
"So...Will you marry me?" Mark asked.
"Of course," I smiled, "I will follow you anywhere,". Mark weakly smiled and then closed his eyes. I smiled back and laid back onto his chest, slowly falling asleep.
