Because Raine changed the rules for the concubines and Noble Consort Mei Ran to greet her every three days, she avoided a lot of disasters.  The schemes the concubines wanted to play with Raine could not be initiated or failed half way.

It was as if they were all being watched and someone or something helped Queen Ame escape the calamity.  The ones who planned the scheme would quickly be caught and the next day she and her family were missing.  

It was only with time that they saw that it was the King who was protecting her.  The King who favored her now that Concubine Bai Yu was under confinement and punishment.  The only thing they could do to vent their frustrations were to brag about Queen Ame’s accomplishments in front of Concubine Bai Yu’s courtyard for her to hear.  

They could only smile in happiness at Concubine Bai Yu’s fall from grace and her outlandish actions as she destroyed her courtyard.  

Five months has passed since Bai Yu’s punishment.  Lui Wei spent every afternoon and every night with Ame.  Their days were peaceful and sweet and their nights were passionate and unending.  Lui Wei found a sense of peace in his life with Ame.

Even though he was King and she was Queen.  Even though her family held a lot of power in the government.  Even though there were still many people he had to be wary of. Even though there was so much to do and so little time, he found peace and happiness along side of his Queen Wife.  If he could continue his life like this for the rest of his life, he would count himself the luckiest man alive.

Lui Wei watched the sun rays fall through the window and own to their naked bodies.  Whatever he wanted to do to her in bed, she never said no to him. Instead she gave in and enjoyed herself as well. Never had he felt so close to anyone before.  As if their two souls became one. As if their two bodies melted into one. As if the missing pieces inside of his heart was completed by her.

Ame was the only woman worthy to be by his side.  He needed to treat her better.

When Lui Wei left for morning court, Raine opened her eyes and sneered at Lui Wei’s condescending ways.  His love was fickle, just like his heart. He’ll love whoever is convenient at the moment. It just so happens that, that person is her.  She could tell that Lui Wei fell in love with her, yet he was too proud to tell her so.

He might not even say it, not until she admitted it to him that she loved him first.  But Raine would never say those three words to him, even if it meant that her mission would finish early.  She refused to. She wanted him to say those words to her when he was ready to say it. Only then it would be his true feelings.  Only then would Ame’s last dying wish finally be granted.

She only had two more weeks until Bai Yu’s punishment period is up.  She needed to move faster to weave her web of love around Lui Wei so if he had to choose between her or Bai Yu.  He would chose her.

It so happens that Lui Wei’s birthday banquet would coincide with Bai Yu’s release from her punishment.  Raine had a lot of things to prepare before then.

As time came closer to Lui Wei’s birthday banquet, Lui Wei spent more and more time with Ame, as if he was trying to make it up to Ame. For he would be going back to Bai Yu, once her punishment was over.  

However, lately Lui Wei felt as if something was off about Ame.  Although their time together was as sweet as always, there was a sadness that she tried to hide inside of her.  Lui Wei couldn’t help to feel guilty, but they both know that in a few days, Bai Yu would be back inside of his arms and he would no longer visit Ame so frequently.  

They avoided mentioning Bai Yu’s name as much a possible, spending time together as happy as they could be.  But Lui Wei couldn’t help himself. The sadness that Ame hid inside of herself was calling to him. His heart could not take it any longer and he could no longer pretend to ignore it.  His love for Ame was something he didn’t expect, but it was something he could not forget either.

“Ame.”  Lui Wei said as he held her tightly.  They were in bed after a long session of lovemaking.  

“Yes?”  Ame said softly.  

The moon was shining brightly through the window, washing Ame’s room in a soft white glow.  

“We need to talk.”  Lui Wei said gently as if he didn’t want to hurt her feelings.  “About Bai Yu.”

Lui Wei felt Ame’s body stiffen then roll away from him.  He quickly pulled her back to his chest, however Ame struggle to move away from him.  

“Ame, please.”  

Ame broke away from him and quickly wore the loose robe hanging off of a chair.  She fixed her hair and sat at the table by the window, far away from Lui Wei. The moonlight shined on to her, casting her features into a shadow.

“Ame….” Lui Wei didn’t know what to say.  His heart was hurting so much from Ame’s actions.  Her ignoring him was the worst.

After a long time of silence, Lui Wei surprise that Ame finally spoke.  

“If we are to speak about another woman.  It will not be in our bed.” Ame said as she kept her face towards the moon.  She would not let him see her feelings.

Lui Wei stood up and walked towards Ame and sat across from her.  Right away, he could tell that she had been crying. Now that she has her emotions under control, it was only then, that she began to speak to him.  

“What is it that you wanted to say to me, my King?”  

Lui Wei sighed heavily.  He wanted to gather her into his arms and hold her.  He wanted to comfort her. But he couldn’t, because right now they were going to speak on the other woman who occupied his heart and mind.  

“I think it best if Bai Yu no longer has to greet you every three days.  She has indicated that she wishes for your death and to keep the both of you safe, I believe if it’s best if the contact between the two of you are reduced to a minimum.”  Lui Wei said softly and slowly as he gauge her reaction. “However, should the two of you meet by fate, she is to follow protocol and bow to you in respect. Should there be any disrespect towards you, you are to give punishment as deserved.”

“If she wishes for my death, what do you wish for me?”  

“I wish for you to stay by my side and be my Queen.  And I told you already, as long as you breathe, you are my wife.”    

Lui Wei watched as a thousand thoughts and feelings ran through her mind and showed on her face.  Lui Wei could not tell what she was thinking or feeling, but he knew his words were tearing the trust, love, and happiness, they slowly built for one another, apart.

Ame looked down and closed her eyes, not letting him see the silent tears falling down her face.  

“Then we’ll do as you say.”

“Ame.”  

“I’m tired.  I still have a lot of things to prepare for your birthday banquet.  I want to go to sleep.”

Ame quickly got up and went to bed.  Her back was facing towards him and he could only feel as if he lost something important.  Lui Wei looked up to the moon and hated the sight of it. It will forever remind him of the night he hurt Ame’s feelings and her trust.

Lui Wei got up and crawled into bed with Ame.  He pulled her close to him and held her tightly.  Between the two of them, no one slept that night.
