[What’s wrong, Raine?]
Scam appeared out of thin air and sat on the side of the bed as he patted her back.
[Why are you crying?]
Raine cried and cried until she fell asleep. Scam sat by her side and waited for Raine to wake up. A few hours later, Raine woke up to a dark room. Scam’s worried face looked up to Raine and turned the light on.
[What happened? Why did you start crying all of a sudden?]
“When I spoke to Rhea, I suddenly thought of my siblings.” Raine told Scam.
[They were so ungrateful to you, Raine. Why would you think about them again, when all they’ve ever done for you was be your burden and the source of your sadness.]
“You don’t get it, Scam. Even though they were my burden, I still loved them and cared about them. I still worried about them and wanted them to do well.” Raine told him. “Although they made me sad, it was me, who chose to sacrifice my life for them… because that’s what you do for family.”
[............................] Scam looked over at Raine and didn't know what to say. He stood up and paced back and forth in front of her bed for a while be fore stopping and speaking to her. His anger was rising every minute he thought about Raine's past life.
[Let’s agree to disagree, because to me, family should help each other. They never lifted a hand to help you. Family, cares for one another. They never cared about you and left you alone to take care of everyone and everything else. Family, is supposed to support one another. They never supported you. You considered them your family, but they never considered you, their family. Even on your deathbed, you died alone! They didn’t even know that you died! Do you know what happened when they finally found out!?!] Scam yelled at Raine, suddenly Scam’s anger unleashed and the lights flickered.
[Leo was the first person to read your email… TWO WEEKS AFTER you sent him the email! When he found out, he was the only one who cried at the knowledge of your death! When he reached out to your other siblings, they finally opened the email you sent them and they asked if you left them any inheritance money! Foolish girl, you sacrificed your whole life to ungrateful little siblings! Leo tried to find your remains, however you didn’t put anyone of your siblings down on your list of emergency contact, so the hospital didn’t know who to contact, but your lawyer. Your body had already been cremated, per your will, and your ashes spilled over the river by your lawyer. By the time Leo arrived to your home, your lawyer did his duty and gave your keys to Leo. He was the only one who cared about you, even if it was a little, he was the only family that cared enough to visit you.]
Tears fell down her face as she listened. She once thought that as long as she worked hard to provide for her family and see them grow up and prosper that her sacrifice would be worth it. But now that she experienced different lives, learned about love, friendship, loyalty and companionship. Her knowledge of what a family should be has changed.
[After you died, none of your siblings kept in contact. Leo was so mad at everyone else, he cut off contact with them! You were the only glue that kept them together. No matter if that glue was thin as paper, you kept them connected. But after your death, they lived on with their life, just as if you were never there.]
Raine sat still, listening to Scam scream at her. Raine wiped her tears and looked at Scam.
“Why was my last lifecycle so full of hardship? Why was I such a fool?”
[I don’t know. But the truth is, I won’t have picked you as my Host if your heart wasn’t so giving and pure. I wouldn’t have made you my Host if you were any less of an amazing person.]
“You picked me? Headquarters didn’t assign us together?”
[I---] Scam said before stopping. [According to Headquarters policy, all systems are issued a Host after a full review. If a Host is found to be qualified, a system will be issued. If a Host is found to be unqualified, nothing would be done and a new Host would be reviewed.]
“But you picked me.”
[Yes, I picked you! I saw how giving, selfless, and innocent you were so I chose you to be my Host.]
“You mean scammed me into being your Host.” Raine corrected.
[Hey! I saved your life!]
“But I don’t regret it.” Raine told him. “Thank you for choosing me to be your Host.”
[Yeah… well… remember that next time you want to beat me up…]
“I’ll remember it for the rest of my life.” Raine told him. “But how is it that you can choose me as your Host?”
[I… don’t remember….] Scam looked through his data once again, trying to remember. [But I feel as if it’s something important. To you and to me.]
Raine moves to the side and takes his hands into hers.
“Whatever it is, we’ll go through it together.”
[Promise?]
“Promise.”
Scam took Raine in his arms and hugs her.
[We have to hurry, because I feel as if we’re running out of time…. ]
Raine nodded her head and pulled back.
“Then once my mission is completed, I’ll leave.”
[What about Lui Wei?]
“He’ll understand.” She told him.
