Reunion (18)

[Poor, pitiful soul, never saw what hit his Highness.]  Scam said as he shook his head and looked over at Raine.  

They were inside of Raine’s carriage and were on their way home.  

[Or should I say a prayer to the Empress and her System as well?]

Raine shrugged her shoulders and closed her eyes.  

“What?  She used him to kill the Li Clan and Li Na.  Why can’t I do the same? This time I’m doing him a favor, by cleaning his court of the corrupted and powerful family ministers while dethroning the Empress.  He should be thanking me for being so magnanimous in not blaming him for the deaths of Li Na’s family.”

[How do you become more and more shameless!]  Scam asked as he snorted at Raine.

“I learned from you didn’t I?”  Raine retorted back.

[You have such a wicked tongue!]  

“So what?!?  What are you going to do about it?!?  Cut it off? You’re stuck with me forever, you know, just accept it.  You’ll soon be immune to my wicked tongue.”

[Never!  You and I will not be stuck together forever!]  

“You don’t want to be my system anymore?”  Raine asked as her features turned serious.  

The sudden change in her demeanor caused Scam to sit up straight and stop pouting and arguing with her.  

[Who said I didn’t want to be your system anymore?  Who? I didn’t say it, so what makes you think that way?]

“But you just said that you and I won’t be stuck together forever.”

[And I mean that.  Once your Soul Force reaches 100,000, Headquarters will grant you one wish.  Most Hosts wishes to not be a transmigrater anymore and live their own life. I just assumed that this would be your wish too.]

Raine kept to herself and looked out the carriage window.  When she began her new life as a ‘Last Dying Wish’ Transmigrater, that was once her goal.  To earn enough Soul Force Points and wish to live a lazy, comfortable life.

However with her experiences, living in different worlds, as different people, and different world views, she had several lifetimes to live a lazy life.  And now, she had become comfortable living as a Transmigrater with her scam system and her slag of a lover. She only wanted to be with them forever. Forever continuing on their journey and adventures.  Forever together.

[Raine.]  Scam asked in a worried voice that matched his worried face.  

“That’s not what I want.  Not any more.” Raine told him as she looked over to him.  

[Do you want Lui Wei’s soul to reincarnate so he can remember you and you guys can be together?]  

Raine turned her head to the side again and fell silent.  It was and it wasn’t what she wanted.

“When the time comes for Headquarters to answer my wish, I’ll think of my wish then.”  Raine told Scam. “But before then, I’m still your Host and you’re my system. We’re in this together.  No matter how shameless I become.”

[As your system, I do as you say, Raine.]  

The rest of their travel was spent in silence.  The next few days Emperor Zhelan got all the information he needed.  Once he read over the findings, he felt himself grow old. The Li Clan was always loyal to the crown, the citizens and the Emperor.  The first of the Li Clan helped the first Emperor establish this country and swore that as long as the Li Clan was a live, they would be loyal to the crown, the citizens and the Emperor.  No matter how the prince’s fought, they were loyal only to the Emperor. Once the old Emperor died, and the new one sat on the throne, they would then be loyal only to the Emperor.

This tradition and promise has been kept for over 100 generations and he exterminated all 9 generations due to his Empress’s words.  He didn’t even look into the allegations and made his judgement without investigation and without a thought.

Because he was grateful towards the Empress, he did what she wanted.  When he kept giving into her request, he soon became tired of her needy ways and began distancing himself away from her.  Her family was once useful, has now become overbearing and arrogant. He now has a good hold over his government, he no longer needed his attack dogs to do the work.  

Sending out his shadow guards to investigate the Empress and his family, Emperor Zhelan felt as if the only way his love could truly forgive him, is if he corrected his mistake.  He would avenge her family for her, even if she forgave him. He would look the other way, when her wedding came and let her marry her childhood betrothed.

Minister Weisheng and Li Na’s fate has long been written to be together.  He could only ensure that they marry each other to pay for his sins towards the Li Clan.  

Linqin and Weisheng’s wedding was set for four months later.  Their fall wedding would coincide with Weisheng’s birthday. A week before their wedding, news of the Empress being poisoned was quickly spread.  The Emperor called upon his palace guards to guard her courtyard, not letting anyone enter or leave her courtyard except for the royal physician.  

[You think he’s placing guards around her courtyard for her own safety or to keep her trapped inside without any family contact and support?]  

“What do you think?”  Raine asked as she worked on the zither in front of her.

[I’m guessing the second option.]  Scam said as his cat body jumped onto the work bench.  

“If you know the answer to that, then why did you ask that stupid question?”  

The cat rolled his eyes and sighed.  He had to get use to her wicked tongue.  [What I don’t know the answer to is how the Empress got poisoned.  My cameras did not catch anyone poisoning her, so how did she get poisoned?  Was it self induced?]

“Would she really poison herself so close to my wedding date?  After all of her planning, would she really self sabotage herself?”

[No… but how did she get poisoned?  The King?]

“The King is too busy slowly closing the net over the Empress and her family to poison her.  Besides, why would he poison her when he plans to dethrone her?”

[Then why don’t you just tell me how she was poisoned, since you know the answer already!]

“Tsk, so impatient!”  Raine said as she blew the wood dust into Scam’s face.  

[Hssssst!  So mean!] The cat hist as Raine as he ran to the corner of the work bench and began licking his paw and rub his face with his paw.  [I was just curious, if you don’t want to tell me then, don’t tell me! I don’t want to know anymore and don’t care to know! Humph!]

Scam turns his body away from Raine and pouts at the corner of the table.  His sad shoulders sags as he looks down at the ground. The poor black cat with white paws looked sad and lonely causing Raine to smile.
