From the corner of her eye, Raine could see the scholarly man was very handsome. With his peach blossom eyes that didn’t match his bushy eyebrows, gentlemen’s nose and thin lips. His hair was tied up in a scholarly bun on top of his head, with a simple wooden pin.
His also had a small red mole that rested to the right side of his lower lip, causing Raine’s eyes to stare at it and the succubus inside of her wanting to bite it.
Raine lead him to the table, where she first took off his outer robe and placed it to the side. Once he sat down, she poured him some wine and waited for him to speak. When he didn’t speak, she took the chopsticks and grabbed some vegetables and placed it on his bowl.
“You should also eat something.” Nyx said softly. “It’s not good to drink on an empty stomach.”
The scholarly man did was he was told and ate the food that Nyx placed on his bowl without a word. They silently sat next to each other, giving food to each other, while accepting the food that was given. Once dinner was finished, Nyx took his hand and brought him to the side.
She helped him wash his hand and dry it with a soft towel before bringing him inside into her chambers. She closed the door to her bedroom and turned around to see him standing right where she left him. Nyx gave the young scholar a shy smile and tugged him to the side of the room where a chaise and table was set up.
He sat down while Nyx poured him another glass of wine and sat at the guqin in front of him.
“What is young scholar’s name?” Nyx asked as she began to pluck the strings slowly and softly.
The scholar looked at Nyx with hidden emotions and yet, he still didn’t say a word.
“Would young scholar want to hear something particular?”
Her question was met with silence.
“Would young scholar want to move on to the bed instead?”
Again silence.
“Then, I’ll just play what’s in my heart then.” Nyx decided as she began to play on the guqin.
That night Nyx played the guqin for an hour before she asked him what he wanted to do next. When her question was met with silence again, she pulled out a poetry book and read to him. Her soft voice was hypnotizing as he laid back into the chaise and closed his eyes. Raine read through the whole book and it took her two hours. The night was no longer young and the sun would soon rise.
Nyx stood up quietly and took a blanket from the bed. She gently laid the blanket over the young, silent scholar and took off his shoes.
Nyx then changed into her sleeping clothes and blew out the remaining candles before crawling into bed and falling asleep. What she didn’t know was that the young scholar woke up the moment she stopped reading. He waited with eyes closed to see what she was going to do.
It surprised him that the courtesan was as gentle, talented, skillful, and beautiful as advertised. He had not planned to visit the red district. He wasn’t one who visited the red district to drink and spend money frivolously. However, it was his best friend’s birthday and his birthday. They were born two days apart, however ever since he could remember, they celebrated their birthdays at the same time.
His best friend, Camron, was a scholar like him. They were to follow their father’s footsteps. Camron tested first in the government official test and will be a minister in the finance department while he becomes a professor at Pareem College.
Camron and their friends dragged him to Pink Orchid to see the new Sixth Beauty of Pink Orchid. They had visited Pink Orchid the whole week and told him stories of the Sixth Beauty’s wit and talent.
He had a first hand experience at her talent, beauty and wit due to his friends pooling their money together to win him a night with Nyx. At first he disagreed with them, however with their constant nagging of him being inconsiderate of their birthday present, he agreed reluctantly and came to her bedroom.
He hadn’t expect Nyx to treat him so well. He had thought that she would immediately force him to bed and that would be it. He had not expect them to feed each other like an old married couple. He had not expect her to treat him so gently and thoughtfully.
When her questions were not answered by him, he had expected her to keep on talking about nonsense, however instead she played the guqin and read him poetry. Her soft, calming voice made him sleepy so he fell asleep without even knowing when he did.
It was only when she closed the book that he woke and realized that he slept well for the first time in his life. Even if the sleep was for a short period of time, he slept without nightmares for the first time in his 24 years of life. And it was all because of the gentle courtesan that his friends bought for him.
He listened to her breathing, deeply and steadily as the sunlight lit the room slowly.
Nero slowly stood up and quietly made his way to her. In the morning light, he silently watched the beautiful, gentle woman sleep so innocently. A suddenly feeling of wanting to claim her came over him. His hands reached out and touched her cheek with the back of his fingers. The softness against his hand made him want her even more. However there was a feeling of losing her and her disappearing forever.
Nero took his hand back and placed it behind his back. With all of his will power, he turned around and left the gentle courtesan to her sleep.
Raine opened her eyes and smiled brightly.
