Shawn staat op het podium en dit keer heb ik een heel ander gevoel dan normaal. Ik ben extra zenuwachtig voor hem, maar hij is super goed, dus het is helemaal niet nodig.

Als hij eenmaal op B-stage staat en plaats neemt achter de piano weet ik dat hij het gaat vertellen aan zijn fans. Hij begint met het spelen van een paar tonen en dan ontmoeten zijn ogen die van mij. "I love you, Mendes." Zeg ik zachtjes, hij kan het nooit gehoord hebben door al het gegil van de fans, maar hij begrijpt het wel meteen. "I love you too." Klinkt er door de microfoon. De fans gillen daardoor nog harder dan eerst.

"I've to tell you guys something and I think it's very important to say out loud actually." Begint hij.

"It's very hard for me to talk about so just give me a second to breathe and give me a second to talk about it." Zegt hij waarna hij diep in- en uitademt. "I want you guys to know. So as a performer when somebody who gets on stage obviously you get very nervous and you freak out and sometimes, hij verslikt zich even en ik zie dat hij zijn tranen in probeert te houden, "it can become a lot for you. And so there's medicine and there're things you can do to help. And I meditate and I do a lot of things to try and calm down, but..." Hij maakt zijn zin niet af en gaat verder over het medicijn.

"There's this type of medicine that's called beta blockers. Basically it's a very, it's a very calm medicine but what it does is it slows your heart rate down so that you can be less stressed out, so that you can be calm down and breathe. But nevertheless it's medicine and I want you guys to know that," weer huilt hij bijna, maar hij laat zich niet kennen en gaat door, " I want you guys to know that for the last year basically every single show that I've played I've been taking the medicine that's been slowing down my heart rate so that I could be calm on stage. And I want you guys to know, because I think it's important that you know, that today is my very first show back without that medicine."

Het publiek gaat te keer. Ze juichen, klappen, schreeuwen, moedigen hem aan. Ook ik klap voor hem. "Yes Mendes! That's my man!"

"And I love you guys so much," zegt hij nog gemeender dan dat ik het hem ooit tegen mij heb horen zeggen, "and I appreciate you guys with everything. And I always say, in every interview I say, if you don't get, If you get nervous it means you care. And I care about nothing more in the world than you guys." Trost kijkt hij om zich heen.

"So that's why my hands shake and my heart rate increases. And I mean every single word I say to you, I promise. I need help with this one, so sing it with me."

"Sometimes I all gets a little too much..." Zingen hij en het publiek samen. "But you gotta realize that soon the fog will clear up. And you don't have to be afraid, because we're all the same. And we know that sometimes it all gets a little too much."

Nog nooit heb ik Shawn zo trots naar zijn publiek zien kijken als vanavond. En dat mag ook wel, want ze zijn geweldig.

Dit was voor mij de laatste show van de Europese tour. En jeetje, wat een mooie afsluiter.
