Just as the Z-powered attack was launched, racing for Midnight, Luna uttered a final command. "Midnight, use Protect!"

A transparent force field appeared around the Synchro-Mega Umbreon seconds before the powerful move blasted everything around. When the dust finally cleared, Midnight was still standing, mostly unharmed. Only her ruffled fur and squinting eyes gave her away. Pikachu, on the other hand, collapsed from exhaustion.

"And the winner is Luna and her Umbreon, Midnight!" Lillie called as Ash picked Pikachu up. The blonde reached out with a revive, jerking her hand back away from Pikachu as soon as Ash had the medicine in his grasp. He fed the Pokemon the medicine, the electric mouse slowly waking up.

Midnight de-transformed from her Synchro-Mega form, back to her normal shiny form. She gave her trainer a high-five as Pikachu regained his strength from the battle. "Great idea, thinking of blocking most of my Z-Move with Protect there," Ash complimented.

"I knew we couldn't win if we took a hit as big and powerful as that, so a simple Protect was all we needed!" Luna responded happily. "Great battle! You too, Pikachu."

"Pikaa," the Pokemon commented wearily. Midnight nuzzled the Pikachu to lift his spirits while Kukui called them together.

"That was a great show of skills on both sides! Come back inside and we can discuss our battle strategies.

Everyone had described their way of battling, and now it was Luna's turn. "Well, Midnight and I have been battling together for years, so we know how to react to many other strategies," she began. "We started off with sharpening her claws and waiting for Ash's attack to boost Midnight's attacking power, retaliating against Iron Tail with a Sucker Punch. When Ash's Pikachu tried to outspeed us with Quick Attack, we used the fact that Midnight and I have been bringing her speed to the max so our Quick Attack could outspeed his."

"Playing to the strengths you know your Pokemon has is always a key tactic," Kukui praised. "Continue on."

"After that, Ash decided to have Pikachu use his strongest move, Thunderbolt, so I had Midnight use Dig. Ground-types are immune to electricity because the ground itself is, so by going underground, the attack couldn't affect her. By using her senses, she located where Pikachu was above-ground and attacked him super-effectively."

Ash looked around sheepishly. "I told you, Luna is always one step ahead of me."

"Having a diverse movepool is always a good way to defeat many opponents," commented Kiawe.

"Pikachu managed to hit Midnight with a powerful Iron Tail, but then we allowed our hearts and minds to connect. Most trainers and their Pokemon can't do this, as they and their Pokemon can't truly bond in the same way, but seeing as I spent most of my life with my Pokemon, we're able to achieve Synchro-Mega Evolution. Once powered up, Midnight becomes nearly unstoppable. One Swift brought Pikachu to near-fainting. He and Ash used their Z-move, but I thought fast and commanded Midnight use Protect. Pikachu then fainted from exhaustion, and the battle was over," Luna finished.

The other students gave her a small round of applause. Luna and Midnight bowed in thanks, laughing. "Thanks guys! Battling with friends is always fun, and sharing our strategies helps us think of better ones in the future!"

"Luna is right. We can all learn from one another, and we've all learned some valuable tips today. I'm proud of your determination and hard work you demonstrated during our battle practice!" The Professor complimented. As the bell rang, he dismissed them with a grin. "See you tomorrow, bright and early. Enjoy the rest of your day!"

Luna and Midnight were the first to run down the hill, slowing only when they reached the bottom. "Just think, in a few hours everyone will be here!" The girl exclaimed. "I can't wait to see them again. It's only been a few days, but I miss them!"

"Eon, umbreon umbre," Midnight agreed, padding alongside her trainer.

"Let's kill some time by going on a run around Melemele! We haven't been out exercising since we've been on vacation, and we could use a good challenge!" Luna suggested.

When her shiny Umbreon nodded, the two began to race down the path, determined to go around the entire island and back to the house before sunset.
