The fated rivalry between Pikachu, its evolution, and a certain shiny Umbreon begins, but Luna's preoccupied by somebody spying on our heroes. And sorry if it's a little short- the next one is gonna be a super long chapter! I don't wanna break the race into multiple chapters, so one big long treat's coming up on the 5th! Save the date!

"{Must... keep... going...,}" Pikachu huffed, a large stack of pancakes on his back.
"{This is nothing, Piks!}" Raichu laughed, floating beside him holding its own pancakes with ease.
Midnight laughed, balancing the stack on her head as she ran beside them easily. "{Pssshh, amateurs. This is a breeze!}"
"That's the way it's done, Raichu!" Nina told her Pokemon, waiting at their practice finish line. After their meal, she had invited Luna and Ash to come practice with her and Raichu, with Kukui, Rockruff, and Rotom Dex watching.
Raichu chirped at the praise before quickening his pace, catching up with Midnight while Pikachu was left behind. "{La la la, here I come to win!}"
Pikachu panted, trying to catch up with them. "Looking good, buddy!" Ash cheered.
"And you, too, sis! Keep it coming!" Luna told her Umbreon.
While Rotom began to tell Ash about Pikachu's increasing speed, Nina turned to her. "Sis? Is that why you have the ears, wings, and tail?"
"Yep! We were raised together, and with such strong bonds, I recently got these myself! It's all thanks to the power of family love!" Luna exclaimed. Meanwhile, Pikachu was closing the gap between himself, Raichu, and Midnight.
Then, with her enhanced hearing, Luna heard something on her left. She turned to see a head of long magenta hair and another with short purple hair.
"Keep running, Middy, I'll be right back!" She told them, crossing the street. "What the hell are you four doing here!?" She hissed.
Jessie, James, Meowth, and Wobbuffet spun around. "Hey! It's the loser twerpette!" The former exclaimed. James only averted his gaze. They seemed to be having a picnic, but on closer inspection, the way they were positioned made it obvious they just wanted to spy on Ash's Pikachu and the rest of the group.
"Jess, leave her alone," James mumbled.
"Don't tell me you're going soft on us!" Meowth asked him with a suspicious glance.
Luna turned away from James. "We've got some history, and he's still an emotional mess I can see. Anyways, stop trying to steal my brother's Pikachu and my Eeveelution siblings. I've got power you can't even imagine, and if you mess with them, you mess with me," she growled darkly.
"Lu, please wait-"
"I don't want to hear it, James. Leave me alone." She turned to walk away.
"Please. Over lunch sometime, on me, let me explain," he pleaded.
Luna rolled her eyes. "Fine, but don't expect me to forgive you this easily," she muttered before running back across the street. Midnight and Raichu had tied, with Pikachu only inches behind them
"Your stack is in perfect order! Shall we aim to shave three minutes off your time during the next practice?" Rotom Dex cheered. "Oh! Alola, Luna!"
"Where did you go?" Ash asked her. "You missed the end results of the race!"
"Team Rocket was spying on us, so I told them to buzz off is all. Now we won't be interrupted!" Luna said in a falsely happy tone.
Ash began to congratulate Pikachu for doing well, but he and Raichu began arguing. "{Would you two quit it? I'm obviously the best racer!}" Midnight cut in.
"{As if! You couldn't beat me!}" Raichu growled at her, electricity flowing from his cheeks.
"{And you couldn't beat me either!}" The shiny Umbreon countered.
"Again? Oh dear, what am I to do with you?" Nina sighed, watching the three Pokemon bicker. She lifted her Raichu up and looked back at Pikachu and Midnight. "You two did great as well! And that was both your first times! Neither of you dropped a plate or a single pancake. Keep practicing and you have a shot at being top finishers!
"You think so?" Ash asked happily. "Wouldn't that be awesome!?"
"My family and I wouldn't have to worry about food for a whole year if we won!" Luna exclaimed, thinking back to the year-long all-you-can-eat free pancake prize.
Nina began walking back to the shop. "Well, we'd better get home, it's getting late after all! See you at the race!"
"{We'll see who's the last one standing for real, then!}" Raichu grinned.
"{Indeed we shall,}" Midnight agreed, bidding her own farewell.
"Come on, Ash, we need a good night's rest if we want to make it to the race bright and early. All your friends from school are going to participate, from what I heard from Mallow, except for Lillie. But she'll be there to watch, anyway," Kukui called.
