New semester and new chapter, and to be honest both are a little lacking, but this context chapter is pretty important for a lot of things to come! So, enjoy!

As soon as Luna left and was out of sight, Raven edged her way out the front door as quietly as she could, Cloudy's Key Stone held in her mouth. The full moon was out, and she felt its energy pass over her, white fur changing to black.
She padded down the pathway until she reached the secluded Big Wave Beach, where she set the Key Stone down. Gently sliding a claw over it, she felt for the thin string around her neck, which held a shifting orb.
"{Raven, mega evolve,}" she said jokingly to herself as the colorful aura of Mega Evolution surrounded her. Her dark fur stayed sleek over her wiry body, ears growing out with night-like patterns forming on them. The patches of fur on her face grew out before fading to a light pinkish-red. Multiple strings of dark silk wound around her neck just loose enough she could breathe, the ends of them melting into vapor. Her two-ended tail summoned a glowing orb to hover between them, and about a dozen red orbs varying from fingernail-sized to a whole hand-sized appeared around her head.
She murmured something in a language that was neither English nor Pokemon-English, waiting expectantly.
Every time she had performed this before, suddenly a bright light would appear, reflecting through the orbs, and a large projection of a transparent Eevee would appear.
The spirit of their mother who had died, but thanks to the overwhelming grief and bond between her and her eldest daughter, evolution occurred, and the Eevee's life force was absorbed into the orb on the now-Espeon's head.
Raven had taken the burden on herself, knowing that some day she'd be strong enough to form a new body and bring her spirit out to live once more.
But this time, nothing happened.
She repeated the phrase once more, but no light appeared, no projection in sight.
Her paws immediately reached up to the orb on her forehead, where the essence of the soul was held. It felt cool and round, like always, so what was wrong!?
She used Flash to illuminate her surroundings before bounding over to the water's edge. Peering over, she stared at the reflection of the sphere. It was always red when she was in this form, to match her eyes and all the other orbs, with a constantly-shifting light inside.
The orb on her forehead was gray, unmoving and empty.
Her Mega Form dropped as she collapsed in a heap on the water's edge. She couldn't form any words, nothing of consolation.
She just managed to pick herself up, grab Cloudy's Key Stone, and run back inside before Luna got home, sprawling out on the edge of the couch as if she had fallen asleep while watching a movie. The Key Stone was hidden under her jaw, as well as the darkness the night wrought.
After Raven was sure the girl had gone to sleep, she slipped the object on the younger, silver-haired girl's nightstand and curled into a ball, trying to keep her weeping as quiet as she could.
"Where are you, mother?"
