The next day at school, Luna rolled up with Cloudy, Lunalox, and Midnight as she often did, chattering excitedly away with them as her sister ran ahead to talk to Kiawe.
She easily made her way through the halls, finding her class and walking in to take a seat. It wasn't long until Professor Kukui came in, who had a larger-than-usual grin on his face. "Alright class, today we're going to be doing battle practice with another class. I take it you all know the rules of a regular Pokemon battle?"
The whole class nodded. "Of course!"
He nodded as he chuckled. "Yeah! Let's head out to the battle field and Quick Attack this challenge!"
Luna raised a fist in the air as she and the rest of the class got up to leave. "Yeah! Battle time! This'll be a great time for Lunalox to finally learn how to fight properly!"
The creature beside her yipped with a giggle. "{Yeah! Time to fight!}"
As they reached the battlefield, Luna noticed another class arriving at the same time, many of the students with Pokemon partners of their own. The teacher was a short-haired brunette with glasses and a kind smile, greeting Kukui and the other kids with a bow.
"Hello, everyone. My name is Miss Emily, and this is my class!"
"And I'm Professor Kukui; these are my students! Say hello, everybody!"
Luna waved alongside Midnight and Lunalox as both classes did the same.
"Now," Ms. Emily continued, "we'll split the group into pairs to fight. Standard battle rules apply- no unfair plays or obscene language. Alright, go choose your pairs!"
Immediately, Ash ran over to a boy with a Mudbray, the others following suit a little less rambunctiously. Luna noticed a somewhat-familiar girl with flowing black hair and violet eyes, whose face contorted into a snarl before she spun away and stomping over in Mallow's direction.
Funny, I feel like I've seen her around before... maybe she came to my live announcement to the press...
Shaking her head to clear her mind of the strange thoughts, she began to step forward to look for a partner, but ended up nearly tripping over Lunalox, who was staring helplessly in the direction of the angry ravenette. "Hmm, what is it girl? Why are you staring after her? I doubt that girl is anything but trouble..."
Lunalox let out a long sigh before averting her eyes. The canid Pokemon put her head down, ears dropping, and began to follow her brown-haired trainer, who reminded herself to check up on her later.
"C'mon, we're going to battle, remember?"
She nodded, turning to look forward without glancing at Luna or Midnight like she usually did. Luna looked around, hoping to find a decent trainer to battle with before all the strong ones were taken.
Luck must have been on her side when her eyes fell upon a face that she, at first, didn't recognize. Probably because, instead of her previous red hooded uniform with golden horns, the lilac-haired girl wore an easy and exited smile in a simple red and white sundress.
"Courtney!? Is that you!?" Luna exclaimed, practically leaping over toward the girl, whose head turned around to meet her. Luna's own blue eyes met the pale red of the ex-Magma admin. "What are you doing here?"
"Luna! Squeee, it's been a while!" Courtney gave the girl a quick embrace before hopping back, though her smile dropped a little bit. "My life went wild when I was still a kid, y'know, so ever since Team Magma fell apart, I decided to start fresh. Clean up my act, find a new place to live and learn, and here I am!"
"I had no idea you were at the Pokemon School, though!" Looking down at Midnight, she noticed the shiny Umbreon also recognized her. "Mid, you remember Courtney, right? After that whole fiasco with Groudon and Maxie, and Archie and Kyogre. Lunalox, this is Courtney! Courtney, this is Lunalox, one of my partners!"
The brunette lifted her winged companion to greet her old friend, who grinned back. "Nice to see you guys again- I heard on the news you were staying in Alola, so I hoped we run into each other!- and it's great to meet such a cute Pokemon. Is this one of the special Alola-exclusive Pokemon I was learning about?"
"We don't really know," laughed Luna with a sheepish lopsided smile. "As far as I know, another one has never been discovered. We wanted to try battling so Lunalox could start getting a hang of her moves, you see?"
Courtney put her hands together happily. "I'd love to battle you again after all this time. I brought two partners with me, so would a double battle be alright?"
"Sounds perfect! Alright! Midnight, Lunalox, let's battle!"
Courtney reached to her belt with a smirk, allowing the Mega Ring on her wrist to catch the sun and appear to momentarily glow, before she released her two partners. "Camerupt, Ninetales, come on out!"
Luna recognized both, though the last time they met Courtney had only recently caught her Vulpix, so they were certainly stronger than before. The two looked over to the teachers, but they both seemed preoccupied with helping the less advanced trainers. Both the girls had battled many times in the past...
"Care to take this a little further away?" Luna prompted.
"And go all out?" Courtney finished. "Sounds perfect! Let's go!"
The girls and their Pokemon found a more open area further from the rest of their friends as they readied the battle.
"Alright, let the battle... begin!"
