In, "Season 3, Episode 17: A Tale of Poes and Fire" Lorelai and Rory had been doing pros and cons of Princeton, Harvard, and Yale. Even thought for two and a half seasons. Lorelai and Rory was talking about her going to Harvard, and no where else. Then after they do the pros and cons lists, Lorelai looks at them and decides to allow Rory to go to Yale. Hope you enjoy!!

(Lorelai's POV)
While I am going pick up of the clutter for the impromptu Inn guest staying in Rory's room.
As I was hanging back up clothes and making the bed, I was suddenly confronted with all of the Harvard stuff that throughout of the years that landed on that bulletin-board. I walk over it. For years I have been telling her that she needed to go to Harvard. To get the education that she needed to be what she wanted to be.
Secretly though I think she wanted her to go to Harvard and not Yale, because of her parents, and father going to Yale.
I want Rory to get where, she wants to go. I walk up to the pros and cons lists, all three of them. I can't let my personal feelings about Yale impact Rory's education, and I should let Rory go to Yale!

Now, we don't know why Lorelai wanted Rory to go to Harvard, but based on the rocky relationship that she has with her parents can make you think about it. Your conclusion might be the reason why she wanted Rory to go to Harvard and not Yale because of the fact that Lorelai had such a rocky relationship with her parents.
