I was still sitting on the swing. It felt like no time had passed. It was pitch black except the light from the house, but there was still no Shane or Otis. Time was slipping away, nobody knew where they were and nobody knew how long Carl would have.
The car lights in the distance were the thing that made my heart stop. Oh, please, lord. I jumped from the swing and ran off the stairs. The car stopped in front of me, it was Carol's car. Oh, god.
The driver door opened and a human came running at me. I looked at the person who had just embraced me in there arms, it was Glenn. I squeezed my arms around his neck.
"H-h-hey, don't forg-g-get about m-m-me." I looked over and T-dog was practically dragging himself out of the passenger seat. He wasn't looking to hot, he barely even looked alive at this point. But he still chuckled hoarsely.
"Dog, you look horrible." I ran to him and put my arm around him. His weight shifted onto me and I heard somebody else jog towards us.
"Let's get him inside." Maggie told me from the stairs.
"Maggie, this is T-dog, he cut his arm on a car while we were hiding from a heard." I nodded at T-dog.
"And this is Glenn." I nodded towards the nerdy looking boy staring at the stairs in amazement.
"We met before, briefly." Glenn said, maybe he just shouldn't do any talking, at all, whatsoever.
"Look. We came to help. Is there anything we can do?" T-dog asked.
"Yeah, Dog, we can get your arm looked at." I told him with urgency.
"He wasn't bit, right?" Maggie asked.
"No, it was just the rust from a car."I told her.
"We'll have it looked at. I'll tell them your here." I nodded my head and she dissipated back into the house.
"We have some antibiotics and pain killers in the backseat. I already gave Dog some but if Carl needs any." I jumped to the backseat and grabbed the bag.
"The Dixon stash!" I cheered while running into Carl's room.
"Glenn and T-dog are here." I said while standing in the doorway. I set the bag down and they walked in.
"Hey." Glenn said.
We looked at Carl and both of there hearts dropped. They were talking for a minute before the three of us went into the kitchen with Maggie.
"Jessamine, your gonna need to drink more. It's non negotiable." Maggie told me and handed me another glass of orange juice.
"Wait. Why? Why does she need to drink more?" Glenn asked and he looked from me and Maggie. I nodded my head and Maggie and she nodded back.
"Jessamine, is gonna donate as much blood that Carl needs throughout the surgery." Maggie told him. Glenn looked like he was going to pass out as he sat on the opposite side of the table as me and T-dog.
"Jess, that's high stakes. Even I know that, and I know you know more of the risks than me." Of course this is where this conversation was going to go.
"I know. But it's the right thing to do. Rick can't donate more, Carl's gonna lose a lot of blood during surgery, and I'm the only other one here right now with the same blood type." That wasn't enough convincing, I didn't really want to do anymore. I was doing it either way.
"Do you know what could happen if you donate that much blood at one time?" He asked.
Of course I knew. I was just hoping that nobody else would show up before the surgery. I don't want them to tell me the stakes 10 more times before I do it. I don't want to die with everybody here for it.
The only thing I was trying to keep on my mind was that it was going to save Carl.
Glenn had tears in his eyes and I walked around the table so I could hug him.
"I don't want to lose you. I can't." I heard T-dog get up and start walking.
"You're not going to lose me. I would do it for any of you." I felt T-dog's head slowly fall to my shoulder.
"Nah, she's got this. I mean look at all she's done in her life so far. Plus this is probably the first time a Dixon has done something like this. We'll have to party after and then once a year on this day because you'll be making history." T-dog kinda sung the last part. Side note, when T-dog is delusional he starts to speak from the bottom of his heart.
I reached around to pat his face. Now I was cornered. But it would all work out.
"Thanks, Dog. But we really need to get that arm looked at. And neither of you are allowed to tell Rick or Lori because they don't know yet."
"They don't know!" I cupped a hand around Glenn's mouth for a second before helping T-dog to a chair. I looked over to see Maggie and Hershal talking, they looked at me and I took a step towards them.
"There going to make the decision soon." I nodded my head.
"What decision?" Glenn asked. Maggie went to go tell him in the living room. I heard a scream and ran to the room. Carl was seizing on the bed.
"His blood isn't getting enough blood. His pressure is dropping. He needs another transfusion." I looked at Rick and knew.
"Me!" I yelled.
"No! You need the blood for the surgery!" They knew the risks of taking more blood from Rick, but they still wouldn't take mine. Cardiac arrest, a coma? I looked at Rick and Lori, I couldn't tell what the looks on there faces were.
But Hershal started to pump blood from Rick. The parents were paying attention to the fact that Carl was seizing and to what I said. This wasn't going to end well. I ran into the kitchen where Patricia was working on T-dog. I grabbed the glass of orange juice and chugged the rest of the cup.
I put my hand on T-dog's good arm. The cut looked infected and something that was straight out of a horror film. T-dog quickly grabbed my hand and gasped and Patricia pulled the finishing touch.
"Jessamine!" I ran into the room when I heard Hershal's voice. Rick and Lori were holding each other and I nodded my head.
"It's time." Hershal looked at me and I nodded my head again.
We grabbed the sheets and layed Carl on a medal rolling cart.
"Rick, Lori, you may want to step out." They started to, but that was when we heard another vehicle pull up.
Hershal told Patrica to set me up. She did exactly what he said. She wiped my left elbow with a cleaner.
"Are you ready?" I nodded my head and she stabbed the needle through my skin. I watched as my blood started to flow into the bottle.
The rest of it was just a big blur of not having my full senses. But I do remember the four transfusions I did in that short amount of time.
They were done before I even knew it. I didn't even know they were done until Patricia came and basically carried me into the room next door.
She helped my into the bed and then tucked me under the covers. I could barely make out what she looked like but I could see that Patricia was holding something near my face. She was trying to put something into my mouth.
She finally did and I was able to get the sweet tangy taste seeping down my throat it felt like the best thing, but then it was gone. I might have been barely awake physically, but mentally I was nowhere near that house.
It was a little bit but then Patricia left, it wasn't long before there was a new body entering the room and sitting in the chair. I noticed that it was Maggie after she had been there for a bit holding the straw next to my face.
But then everything went black and I was spiraling into a black abyss.
