(Imagine Jess is a little older, that way the story makes more sense. I'm gonna say she's about 14 now. So either she's always been older than the beginning or more time has passed from the beginning. Whatever you want to imagine.)
I knocked on Deanna's door and she opened it nearly a minute later. She looked at me with a smile and I smiled back at her.
"Jess, what a pleasant surprise. Why don't you come in." She said and we walked back to the same room that she did the interviews.
I sat down across from her again and she looked at me with excitement.
"Do you want anything to drink?" She asked. I shook my head.
"No, I'm good, thank you though. I just came to ask basically permission on something." I told her and she nodded her head.
"What would that be?" She asked and I grabbed the map out of my back pocket.
"And your prepared." She said with a smile.
I laid out the map on the table. Deanna leaned forward and looked at the red pen that traced where I wanted to go.
"When we traveling from Atlanta, I was looking at places nearby. Places that would have everything we need after we clear all the surroundings. Or places we could use if we ever have to travel outwards." I told her.
"You guys really did plan for every possible thing." She said while looking up at me.
"We tried to have all the possible outcomes already thought of. Sometimes it caught us off guard. But this place would have everything we need, or things we would need if we needed to shut down, escape, anything. Now I know you don't really think about those things. But I do, it's all I do." I told her and she nodded her head.
"Why do you think I gave you your job." She told me and I smiled. I figured she would look at me like I was crazy.
"It's only about 10 miles away, if your people haven't already picked it clean, then I would like to go there. Today." I told her and she nodded her head.
"By yourself?" She asked.
"That or if you want somebody to come with me I prefer it not be Aiden or Nicholas. I meant everything I saw to them and I don't plan on dying on this trip." I told her and she nodded her head.
"There's a girl, Enid. She's about Carl's age, she doesn't talk much. She's been here for awhile, she came alone. She was surviving by herself until she got here. I think she could warm up to you at the least." Deanna said and I nodded my head.
I didn't know many girls my age. I barely knew any kids my age. If she was a fighter and a survivor then I want to meet her at the least.
"Yeah, of course! People are a resource. So your saying I can do this?" I asked.
"I'm saying you can do this. Just let me know when your leaving and give me a gap of time before we have to assume the worst." She told me and I smiled.
"Thank you!" I exclaimed. I rolled up the map and ran out of the house.
I sprinted in through our doors and ran up to Carl's room. He was laying there reading a comic and I jumped on his bed. I was standing above him and he finally looked at me.
"What can you tell me about Enid?" I asked and he went back to the comic.
"Why?" He asked. He really couldn't just answer the stupid question.
"Because, Carl, I need to know. That should be enough for you to just tell me what you know." I told him and he sighed long at me. He put the comic down and looked back at me.
