It had become late and dark. They were already getting ready for dinner. Someone was missing from the table, that should have been there. The others hadn't realized yet. They were putting food on the table, all of the others seemed to be starving.
"They should be back by now." Andrea stated.
"Yeah. They just got holed up somewhere." Shane "reassured" us. I sat in between Carl and T-dog.
"We'll-we'll head out first thing in the morning." Everybody was making themselves a plate. T-dog put a few pieces of lettuce on my plate, along with a few slices of potato.
"Oh, T, I'm not hungry." I whispered to him.
"My sister had the same thing and I remember her almost dying. So, just a few bites, please?" I looked up and T-dog and nodded my head.
"Okay." I whispered back to him and grabbed a fork.
"Carl, I want you to keep your head up, okay? Your old man, he's the toughest son of a--"
"No cussing in the house." Patricia scolded Shane and he acted like a douchebag when he said sorry. It was enough to make me want to punch him in the face.
"Lori, dinner." Carol called out.
"She's not in there." Maggie told her.
"Where is she?" Dale asked and I dropped my fork down. I didn't mean to, but it just happened. I pushed my chair out.
"I'll be right back." I whispered before walking away from the table. I could hear them still talking and I continued walking towards the door.
I felt somebody grip onto my wrist. Before I even looked to see who it was I yanked my wrist back. I turned around and it was Shane. I scoffed as I saw everybody else running around the house.
"Where is she?" He asked.
"Why would I tell you?" I asked him back.
"Because this is for the safety of one of our people." He told me.
"No, it's the safety of the women you love, and you want her to yourself." I corrected him.
"Jess, just tell me where Lori is. You know, I know you do." He demanded from me.
"I thought you people would be smart enough. She went for Rick."
"How do you know?" He asked me like I was lying.
"I don't have to explain myself to nobody, specially not you." I told him.
"Stay here, keep the group calm." Shane ran out the door and I went back to the table. Everybody had rounded back there. They were all badgering me with questions about the situation.
"Can we just eat?" I asked and they all listened. Everybody ate the meal in front of them in complete silence.
When everybody was done eating I brought Carl into a room. He sat down on the bed and I knelt down in front of him.
"Carl, your mom went into town." I told him and he started to whimper.
"Shane went to go get her, and hopefully the others." I told him and he got quiet.
"Are they gonna be back?" He asked me, I didn't even know, but too many people were out there already.
"Of course. But, do you want to tell the others?" I asked him and he shook his head. That was what I figured.
"Okay." We stood up and walked back out. They started to question him immediately.
"Y'all best leave him alone!" I told him and they all got quiet. But Andrea felt the need to step forward and try to be a leader again.
