Let's face the facts and agree that deep inside we all want 15M peeps to read our books and drop comments like

"Blue pineapple is bootiful! i wuv the storay" - Lizzys3rdBraincell

"Your bokkk is awesum nd i love it. Wig snatched." - 2blessed2Bstressed

"Your book is absolutely impeccable in terms of  grammar and i absolutely love the struggles your MC had to go through before she turned into the woman we see now in the 2nd last chapter! I only wish there was a bit more dialogue in this chapter but uh! as long as i get to read this book, i ain't complaining. Btw can you check out my book? Here's the link: xjadsabsvdi" -TrekShipper101

There are times when the author finds the first 2 comments far more entertaining than the last one. Do you know why? Not because that we authors are heartless and dont like to read. Rather, these self advertisements are a massive buzz kill.

Imagine writing a book with a comment section filled with random people advertising their own book. Disappointing.

Therefore in this chappie we'll discuss how to avoid "self advertising".

and then in the other, we'll discuss how to advertise your book effectively (Those tricks will  actually get you reads)

1. Message boards

Have you ever went to a famous wattpad author's message board (Not mine ofc) and seen the swarms of messages that fall along the lines of "Hey, can you read my new psycho-thriller romance featuring Shrek and trump?"

Now doing this isn't bad.... but...

1. It makes you look desperate and people don't see your work in a "respectable" manner.

2. The author is more likely to delete your message since their message board isn't an advertisement board. So please refrain from annoying your fav author. Cuz few authors may even block you. (Which is not something to be proud of. Yes tiktok, i'm referring to your "blocked by a __ check" challenge. Ya'll need to calm your tits.)

2. A book's comment section

Unless the book is specially dedicated for self advertisement or the author himself say that they permit YOU advertising your story in their comment section; please don't.

Now, we all know SeLf pRoMoTioN BaD

But... why?

Why is it so bad? You are just being polite. It's not like you are holding a gun on a person's head.

i. It devalues your writing. Have you ever wondered why Shakespeare, Enid Blyton or Arthur Conan Doyle has never approached you to request a read?

...

It's because they all are dead and we don't need a zombie author coming our way.

But at the same time, their work has quality to it. Their stuff is so well written that they don't need to advertise it. When a person reads their work, the same reader shares his/her/their experience with other peeps and this starts a chain reaction which forms literal fandoms .... and then consequently.... TV adaptation (Or worse, a netflix adaptation in which they change your character's whole ass personality. Yes, i am still not over Riverdale and teen titans. No... i'm not crying, u are. )

If your work is good then it will surely makes its way out there. Remember, Harry potter was rejected by 12 publishers. But that stuff was good thus it blew up once it (finally) got accepted.

Therefore just focus on the quality of your writing. Stop making excuses. Wattpad is an international forum and there is literally an audience for everything!

Just start writing and let your reader's do the rest of the work. These votes, these "XYZ added your book to their reading list" matters! and this helps you to grow as a writer.

ii. It just makes a reader think "If this book is really greaatttt, then why is the author practically begging other people to read it?" And this devalues "you" as an author.

3. Those peeps who self advertise in their own books.

Like imagine that "Cliche cliche everywhere" just got updated. You are kinda sorta happy and your click on it. BOOM! Lizzy Sidd is shamelessly advertising a book that she has not even started writing.

(LIES!!1 I AM DONE WITH THE FIRST CHAPTER!!!)

And what makes it more shameless is the inclusion of a Trailer!

Yes, a trailer for a soon to be published book.

Like c'mon!

But seriously... everyone is free to come over and critique my stuff. Be as harsh as you like since i really wanna complete this new book. #ShamelessSelfPromotion.

Love,

Lizzy
