"I don't understand the point of any of this attacks," I groaned pulling off my suit jacket. Now Alistair had seen the scars I felt a little less conscious, I did notice however him glancing with a frown for a split second. "Ugh other than scaring people it just seems like a warning, like something worse is gonna happen."
"Uh yeah," he walked over to the window and leaned on the wall.
"Everything okay?" I asked glancing at the briefcase.
He squeezed the bridge of his nose between his fingers and huffed. I couldn't tell what was going on in his head. "I'm just tired," he grumbled.
"Come on," I moaned crossing my legs on the end of the double bed "tell me what's on your mind."
He came and sat beside me "tell me what happened with Harry. I don't want to push you but I know whatever it was wasn't what you wanted. I know you and those were never on your mind."
I dropped my legs off the bed and stood up. Wrapping my arms round myself I kept my back to Alistair. Now the scars burned with embarrassment and shame. Tears pricked my eyes as I squeezed my upper arms. "Nothing makes sense," I muttered before saying louder "I'm gonna shower." He grabbed my hand gently pulling me round to face him. I couldn't look up at him as I mumbled "I only get one chance at forever. I need to work past this."
Alistair held me at arms length "it might not be though, there are accounts of wolves finding second chances." Dragging me into a hug I buried my head into his chest still holding back the tears. "Get some sleep Cubby, you can shower later." I nodded rubbing my eyes as he let me go. Grabbing my bag I went into the bathroom and changed into my pjs, soft fluffy black pjs. Then climbed into the single bed closest to the window. Rolling over onto my side I faced the wall and closed my eyes falling asleep almost instantly. What felt like only a few minutes later I woke up to two voices, Alistair and a woman's voice I couldn't place but felt familiar. He sounded worried "he's gearing up for something, I just know it." I could hear him pacing back and forth.
"Alistair you've already made sure my family are safe it's time you did the same for yours. Take her home to London," she sighed heavily.
"It's not that simple anymore Mari, something happened with her mate making her off her game anyway. If I force her to stay at the compound she'll think I'm meddling," he stopped pacing. "I can't take her away from this case either because Alex will know and start killing."
"But she will be in direct danger, out in the open. He will kill her and finish what our father started." I heard lighter footsteps than Alistair's and assumed they were hers. "If Cameron goes ahead the killings will start and I'm afraid there's no stopping this. She's old enough to know and old enough to handle this, especially if she understands what she's up against." They talked a little more before bidding goodbye to each other and she left, as I heard the door click open then shut. I continued to pretend to be asleep eventually actually slipping back into slumber:
