The scent of fresh croissants and coffee woke me from my slumber. Rolling over I saw Alistair just hanging up his phone "morning, did you sleep well?"
"Yep," I brought my knees to my chest and asked "so who was the visitor last night?"
"So you were awake," he chuckled bringing me a croissant and hot coffee.
"You could tell?" I questioned taking the hot beverage and food off him.
He chuckled again "of course, come on I did raise you."
I sipped the coffee and took a bite out of the croissant. "So who was she?" I pressed.
He walked back to the other bed before answering "well I assume you have a theory seeing as you overheard us." Picking up his own coffee he sipped, set it down and continued with "but before you say your theory I'll just tell you, she's my sister."
My jaw dropped "sister? I didn't know you had a sister, but I kind of got that from her saying about your father and whose Alex?"
He clenched his fists beside himself "my younger brother and that's all I'll say on the matter. Now get a shower we are going to come up with a plan for security for each place then we are going home."
"But wouldn't it be better to find Alex and stop or arrest him or something?" I asked innocently.
"No," he turned away from me and I knew then I'd struck a nerve. Turning back he softened his expression, "it's just best we don't okay." Walking over he sat on the edge of the bed beside me. "He's dangerous, I've informed them back in London. When we get back you can brief everyone on the attacks but they'll already know who is ordering them."
Squeezing my knees tighter to my chest I bit my lower lip "are you sure? People might get hurt or worse if we don't do anything."
"We aren't doing anything, we are doing our jobs. I'm sorry I know this was supposed to be you taking the lead but even after all this time you're still that little girl I want to shield" he explained. I knew he meant well and his concern like this had me worried even more. "Go on and shower I'll pack everything up. Then we can write a plan," he smiled reassuringly.
Climbing out of the bed I grabbed my bag of clothes and disappeared into the bathroom. I was desperate for a warm shower and hoped it would help to sink in everything I'd learnt since coming to Birmingham. Turning the water on I let the room fill her with steam before stepping into the warm water.
