Jogging past the compound memorial and in through the lobby area I slowed to a walking pace. I could see Becca talking to someone who was round a corner, as I got closer I could see it was actually Alistair. He looked drained, bags under his eyes and as I got even closer he yawned rubbing his eyes.
"See I told you not to worry, no one thinks you are sympathetic to him" Becca said gently rubbing his upper arm.
Alistair's eyes settled on me "oh hi Cubby," the fake cheer was obvious. Becca turned round also offering a fake smile.
"Hey is everything okay, if you don't mind me saying you look like shit" I said being frank. I wasn't beating around the bush here.
"Just tir..." he sighed "okay look I've been a bit worried about what the higher ups would say about me to do with my brother."
"But everything is fine," Becca butted in "nothing to have worried about."
"Dad?" I raised an eyebrow.
"Really it is, I've just come from a meeting with the big boss. He knows where my loyalties lie, he was asking more if my sister needed more protection. Anyway are you doing...?"
"Yeah things are really good just been for a run round the grounds. Got another call with the EU council of wolves so hoping to make an alliance no matter the outcome in a few weeks." I leaned on the wall trying to act a bit more relaxed. "So I'm headed back to the pack house tomorrow did you fancy hanging out tonight? Like we used to, you know" I blushed a little.
He stood up straighter and beamed "of course. So you and me tonight, I'll bring snacks and drinks. Just like old times," you could really tell it had lifted his spirits.
"Yeah but now she can drink too," Becca laughed patting Alistair on his shoulder. "Right come on you we've got to interview a few witnesses and write up reports before down time." She placed a hand on my shoulder and smiled "see you later." The pair of them headed off towards the doors outside while I headed down the corridor. On my mind was checking I had some beers in my fridge, I was pretty sure I had some frozen pizzas and stuff. If I didn't I'd pop out at lunchtime.
