(Y/N POV)
"It's open."
I had to stifle a laugh, hearing Luis's tired voice call from inside his dorm room. I opened the door to find him sprawled out on his bed, his eyes closed. It was Friday night but none of the Ducks really have any plans. Coach had called an impromptu scrimmage before school this morning so we were all kind of drained. I had overslept when Luis came banging on my door to walk with me so I wasn't quite as tired as he was.
He gave me a small wave before he dropped his arm over his eyes as I slipped my shoes off. I couldn't help giggling quietly at his dramatics. I dropped my bag by his desk and sat in the small space on the bed that was left open. He moved his other arm closer to himself to give me more room.
"There's no way you're actually sleeping. It's only, like, 8 o'clock!" I said, shaking his shoulder lightly. He groaned back at me and turned over onto his stomach, burying his head into the pillow. I rolled my eyes and grabbed the TV remote from his bedside table. I turned it on and started flipping through the channels. A familiar nerd in red glasses and suspenders caught my attention. 'Oh, cool. 'Family Matters'.' I thought to myself, turning up the volume. I saw Luis stir slightly out of the corner of my eye. Grinning, I turned it up louder than it necessary to try to get his attention. It worked because after a few seconds his head popped up.
"Alright, alright. I'm up. You don't gotta blow out my eardrums," Luis sat up, putting his back to the pillows and wiping his bleary eyes. "What are we watching?" He asked. I sat back next to him, turning it back to a reasonable volume.
"New episode of 'Family Matters'. Apparently things weren't wacky enough and Steve can now read minds." I set the remote down in between us. Luis laughed beside me. I gave him a quizzical look. "You really think that idea's funny?" I asked.
"No but it's very funny that you think that's what we're going to watch." He said, smirking and picking up the remote.
"Oh, come on, Luis! It just started! It's the last season!" I said. I made a grab for the remote but he was too quick and he held it above his head.
"No way, Y/N/N. I cannot sit through another minute of Urkel's annoying voice." He complained, rapidly changing the channel. I tried to make a grab for it again but he moved the remote just out of my reach. "Did I do that?" He mocked, in a nasal voice. I wanted to laugh but I wasn't going to give him the satisfaction.
I tried again without success. He narrowed his eyes playfully and stuck his tongue out in victory. I wasn't about to let him win though. I brought my face in close to his and stared into his eyes. It wasn't much but it was enough to distract him briefly and I made my move, grabbing the remote and changing the channel back. "Ha!" I exclaimed happily.
"Oh, you're dead, Y/N!" He laughed before launching himself at me. I screamed out a laugh and brought the remote closer to myself as Luis tackled me onto my side. He started poking me and tickling me in a cheap effort to get me to drop it but I held onto it tight. I extended my arm out to the side, putting it well out of his reach. It didn't stop him from trying though. He reached over me quickly, making a grab for it but apparently misjudged the amount of weight his supporting arm could hold. He fell on top of me, our faces now inches apart. Our laughter faded out as we both came back to reality and we stared at each other for who knows how long.
A knock on the door, however, broke our gaze. He quickly got off of me, sitting back up against his pillows. I sat up as well, fixing my disheveled hair while he called out for whoever it was to come in. Not a second later, the door opened and in walked Mindy.
"Hey, babe!" Luis said as he got up from the bed. He made his way over to her, wrapping his arms around her waist and kissing her cheek. Both actions felt like a punch to my gut, as always.
"Hi, baby. Sorry I took so long. Oh, hi, Y/N." Mindy replied, throwing a glance my way. I wasn't surprised at my presence being an afterthought to Mindy. The usual air of awkward tension filled the room but if Luis noticed it, he didn't say.
"I should probably go." I said, getting up. I grabbed my shoes and slipped them on. I could feel Luis's confused stare follow after me and tried my best to ignore it.
"Are you sure? The three of us could hang out together and watch a movie or something." Luis asked. I didn't even get the chance to consider it, the fake smile on Mindy's face made it extremely clear that I was not welcome there.
"Yeah, I promised Connie I'd help her with our history homework." I grabbed my bag and made my way to the door. I looked back at Luis but wished I hadn't as I saw them sitting cozily on the bed. "I'll see you guys later." I said as I opened the door.
"I'll walk with you again to practice tomorrow. Just don't be late this time, sleepyhead." He smiled at me with that stupid, charming smile that made my heart skip a beat. I was really starting to hate that smile.
I gave them both a quick wave before leaving his dorm, shutting the door behind me firmly. I was about to leave when I heard them talking inside.
"Y/N sure is spending a lot of time around you lately. Kind of makes a girl worry."
"What? Nah. Y/N's just a friend. You have nothing to worry about, babe."
I stood in the hallway, taking a few deep breaths and trying to keep the tears at bay but ultimately failing. Just a friend. The three words that always made my heart shatter into a million pieces. It's not even like I could blame him or anything. I'd never told him how I felt about him (only Connie and Julie knew) and now he's with her. He was with her and he was happy.
I wiped my eyes quickly and sniffled quietly. I readjusted my bag's strap over my shoulder before making my way down the hallway with my head up high. Or at least as high as I could muster. It really sucks, wishing for something you know you can't have. Because no matter how much I wished we were more, that's all I'd ever be to him. Just a friend.
(A/N: So...what did you lovelies think? I know, I know. My first oneshot and it's sad. I'm sorry! I was in a writing mood the day I started this but all that would come out was heartbreak-y stuff. I have a few others in the works that are happy and fluffy though so don't worry! The title comes from the song 'Slapstick Heart' by Sam Phillips (you might know her songs from 'Gilmore Girls'). I wanted to use a song title that wouldn't give away too much but was still on topic. Anyway, how did you like it? Let me know in the comments! And remember, if you have any requests (preferences, imagines, or oneshots), SEND THEM IN! And yes, that really did happen on an episode of Family Matters lol Thanks!)
