Alex

Hey I just wanted to text to say I'm
sorry for putting you in an impossible
situation in our relationship. I wasn't
ready to be out and I'm sorry that I
asked so much of you, hope you are well.

Thanks for this Jake. Does mean
a lot

Also was weirdly proud when
you came out.

Hope you are good too.

george: oooooooh dad in on the burn

niamh: ouch mol got roasted, yeah I can be about xx

jake: yeah ill be round, think George was gonna come to Old Trafford on sat, to watch the game, so I'll get a lift back.

mumma j: is this an open invite to the football? X

jake: always x

george: we can avoid the game JJ, if you don't want the fam around with the Mase thing. Like if it's just easier to deal with yourself we don't have to come x

mol: I better not go 😤

jake: nah honestly it's fine, I don't think the fam will bump into him or anything and, bar on the pitch, I don't think I will either so.

nemo: you spoke at all?

jake: nope nothing

george: yikes

jake: will be very odd to see him ngl

mol: yeah not ideal but you'll be fine jakey, you aren't the one who should feel awkward

george: has any of the lads heard from him? Or is he just blanking all of the group chats?

jake: he left a couple, but tbf I don't want to bring any of the others into it. Like they should still be his mate too.

mol: debatable

jake: a notch down from this would be fine mol x

mol: apologies

george: rashy spoke to him nemo?

nemo: erm unsure whether he's spoke to him or not, think there was an attempt to reach out, declan was quite worried and think recruited a few of the England lads to try pull him out of the mess he's in.

george: to no luck??

nemo: I haven't really asked, but I don't think as successful as they'd hoped.

mol: I hope they do try again because the boy clearly needs help

jake: as much as I'm loving this dissection of my ex boyfriends current status, I've got a match to prep for so bye losers x

Saturday came around, and a ball of dread lined Jake's stomach. But a tinge of excitement of seeing Mase's face had crept into his head. A feeling he tried to suppress, but was there nonetheless. The night before, Jake dwelled on what it would be like to be face to face with him again. Would they speak? Would their eyes linger? Would he look at Jake and realise the big mistake he had made?

Unfortunately, the reality was much less romantic. The first time Jake saw him, was as they walked into the tunnel. Mase had his head down and eyes to the floor, totally ignoring his presence. For 90 minutes, even with their close interaction, he didn't say anything to the United player, not letting his eyes stay on Jake for more than the game required. The final whistle blew on the 0-0 draw, and both sets of players shook hands and exchanged pleasantries. But not Mason. As soon as he heard full time, he walked straight towards the tunnel, into the changing room and then onto the coach.

It had been a sucker punch Jake hadn't expected. It was like they had never met. Cold. He didn't recognise this guy, who he'd spent his whole summer with, the whole of lockdown. He was fight a lump in his throat the whole time he spoke Chilly, Fik and Tammy. Marcus and Dean could tell this had knocked him for six. Bu there was nothing any of them could do to make it any better.

As he sat in George's car, on the way home that night, he went into his contacts, scrolled down to M, and deleted the Chelsea boys number from his phone. Quickly followed by messages, photos and groups chats, soon it was like Mason was only some opposition he'd come against a few times. Exactly like Mason had treated him today. Tears fell from Jake's face as he deleted happy photos from Greece, texts saying 'I love you'. But if he was going to get over him, he had to purge the memory of him from his life.

Time to move on.
