Chapter XLII

Ruby was walking along the beach to pass the time, knowing that it was still a long time before dawn and the arrival of the HMS Providence.

At one point, the sky clouded over, blocking out the stars and the moon. This made Ruby want to go a little further into the island and away from the coast.

After some time, while rounding a wooded area, Ruby heard a weird sound and saw two sparkling pearls high up in a tree. As she approached, the pearls began to rise until Ruby clearly saw that they were the eyes of an owl.

Ruby began to follow the bird, until it reached an area where the forest shared territory with the beach, and perched on a low branch of a tree next to the sand.

Ruby approached the bird, and when her hand was a few inches away from it to touch it, the owl transformed into a woman who had already recognized Flame. Ruby, on the other hand, to her surprise, took a few seconds to recognize Johari.

Johari: Hi, Flame.
Ruby: (Surprised) Johari! It's you!
Johari: Yes. It's me.
Ruby: I thought you had sunk with the Lotus Flower.
Johari: The Lotus Flower didn't sink, Flame.
Ruby: But... I saw it sinking just in front of my eyes.
Johari: (Denies)
Ruby: If it didn't sink, what happened then?
Johari: Blackbeard. He keeps the ships he has fought against in small glass bottles as trophies.
Ruby: (Surprised and angry) Blackbeard?!
Johari: (Nods)
Ruby: The one and only Edward Teach?
Johari: (Nods)
Ruby: And what about the other ones? How are the other pirates? How's Marty? How's Jack?
Johari: The monkey?
Ruby: (Nods)
Johari: I don't know. I don't even know if they survived.
Ruby: (Sighs) Another reason to hate Blackbeard.
Johari: Another? Why other? You already hate him?
Ruby: He's Angelica's father.
Johari: Angelica? Who is Angelica?
Ruby: A former lover of Jack Sparrow.
Johari: But why do you care so much? You yourself just said former.
Ruby: But lately they have been very close together.
Johari: So Sparrow is not with you right now?
Ruby: He was kidnapped. By Angelica.
Johari: Blackbeard's order?
Ruby: I don't know. All I know is that right now there is no one I hate more than Angelica Teach.
Johari: And what do you intend to do?
Ruby: If it was for me, I would kill both. Father and daughter.
Johari: But?
Ruby: I promised Hades I wouldn't use my power to murder unless it was for self defense. And none of them is attacking me right now.
Johari: Jack loves you. I saw how he treated you on the ship. If he's not with you right now, it's because of the kidnapping. You were the one who said it.
Ruby: I hope so.
Johari: And... what are you doing here in Whitecap Bay?
Ruby: First, give me the word and then I'll answer everything you want to know. I have some things to tell you before.
Johari: (Confused) Okay...
Ruby: First of all. We're friends. You don't have to call me by my goddess name.
Johari: Then how?
Ruby: Call me by my birth name. Ruby.
Johari: Ruby? I thought your only name was Flame. I didn't know you had another name by being born as a human.
Ruby: Now you know.
Johari: I like your name... Ruby.
Ruby: (Smiles thankfully)
Johari: What other thing you had to tell me?
Ruby: It's... a question.
Johari: Go on.
Ruby: Who are you?
Johari: (Confused) I'm Johari. You don't believe it's really me?
Ruby: Of course I know it's you. But I want to know then what are you?
Johari: (Confused) Why are you asking me questions with obvious answers? Are you trying to prank me?
Ruby: Not pranks at all. I just want you to tell me what are you.
Johari: I have already told you.
Ruby: No lies, please.
Johari: Ok. I'll repeat it. I am an escaped slave from the sugar fields. Happy with that answer?
Ruby: (Denies)
Johari: I really don't know what answer you expect. If I knew, I would gladly give it to you.
Ruby: If you're a simple human, as you say you are, then how do you do it?
Johari: (Confused) Do what?
Ruby: I got here following an owl and ended up talking to you. How do you explain that?
