Chapter XC

Juliana and Ruby were talking about other things while they were returning to the Black Pearl and when they arrived, leaning over the edge, they continued talking about the same topics.

Ruby: July, as we were coming from the Gates of Hell you said that you would like to live in a place like this island, right?
Juliana: You heard right. Adrielle and I love nature and there is very little greenery in Port Royal.
Ruby: (Smiling) And what this place has the most is greenery.
Juliana: Why that question?
Ruby: You see, on this island there is a shack, which was inhabited by the Goddess Calypso.
Juliana: (Remembering the shack where she went with Johari) Is it, by any chance, a shack that is right next to a river?
Ruby: (Surprised) Next yo a river in the middle of the woods. How do you know?
Juliana: Johari took me to that place before going down the Gates of Hell. We went to look for the blue pills and there she gave me the crown of branches.
Ruby: What did Johari tell you about the shack?
Juliana: Besides the fact that Calypso had taken her in on this island after escaping from the sugar plantations, she also told me that this was the place where you two met.
Ruby: (Smiling as she remembers that day) That's right. We met on this island.
Juliana: She also told me that a voodoo priestess lived in that shack.
Ruby: Calypso in her corporeal prison.
Juliana: That's why there are so many magical elements.
Ruby: That's right.
Juliana: This place is beautiful. The island, the river, the shack... everything.
Ruby: I've got you a little proposal.
Juliana: What type of proposal?
Ruby: Well. As you know, that shack was inhabited by Calypso for a long time. She, in her human form, Tia Dalma, was in charge of protecting every inhabitant of this island. When Calypso was freed, she gave me, Flame, the job to protect the inhabitants of the island, so the shack became mine.
Juliana: So the shack is yours now?
Ruby: Aye aye. But there's a problem with that.
Juliana: What problem?
Ruby: You know that I'm a pirate and loyal captain of the Lotus Flower. That means that my home's the sea.
Juliana: Ok... I don't see the problem with that.
Ruby: The inhabitant of the Voodoo Shack is also supposed to be in charge of protecting the inhabitants of the island. And if I'm at the high seas, I wouldn't have how to protect the island.
Juliana: What are you trying to tell me with that?
Ruby: You would have a comfortable, safe, and cozy place to live on this island. Plus, it can accommodate two people without any problem.
Juliana: (Confused) But... why me?
Ruby: Calypso... Flame... Tia Dalma always wanted this place to be in charge of a divine being... Liana. What do you say?
Juliana: Do you think that would also be a good way to get out of an arranged marriage?
Ruby: You, who have a good relationship with Marianne, if you want to continue having that good relationship, you should tell your mother the truth. The truth about you and Adrielle, and the truth about where and with whom you want to live.
Juliana: (Sighs) You're right. But I'm not the only one who has a pending conversation with Marianne.

Ruby quickly understood that Juliana was referring to her, but the fear she had of Marianne made her deny it without thinking about anything before.

Ruby: (Shakes her head with a scared face)
Juliana: You shouldn't worry so much now that you're in control of the Heart of Fire. Besides, I'm gonna be there. I doubt that with me by her side, my mother would hurt anyone.

Jack, who was passing by the sisters, heard the end of the conversation and agreed with Juliana. It was time for Ruby to talk things over with Marianne.

Jack: (Rests his hand on Ruby's shoulder) I'm gonna be there for you too, Apple Pie. I won't let anything or anyone hurt you. But I also think it's important for you to speak with your mother.
Ruby: Thanks Jackie. You're right. I should speak with that woman. (To Jack) But I also have a pending conversation with you.
Jack: With me?
Ruby: (Nods) With you.
Jack: (Worried) What happened with me? Did I do something wrong?
Ruby: No! You've done nothing wrong. On the contrary, I've told you many times that thanks to you I'm still alive.
Jack: So?
Ruby: It's about me. It's about something I am feeling and something I would like to do.
Jack: What are you feeling? What do you need? Please tell me so I can help you.
Ruby: I prefer it to be at another time and in another place where we are alone.
Jack: How about after this celebration we go to Tortuga, order some of the best rum in the Caribbean, maybe something to eat, and chat there?
Ruby: I'd prefer it to be after talking with Marianne. And... after... sailing on the Lotus Flower again.
Jack: So it's not that important?
Ruby: It's nothing urgent. At least not yet.
Jack: Please just don't wait until it's too late.
Ruby: I won't forget it. I promise that when the time comes, I'll tell you.
Jack: Would you want me to bring you a bottle of rum?
Ruby: (Smiling) Yes please.
Jack: I won't last more than a minute.

Jack left to get a bottle of rum for Ruby, and Juliana, who had been standing by listening to the entire conversation, didn't wait to ask Ruby a question.

Juliana: So you are going to try to see that mermaid again?
Ruby: What does the mermaid have to do with all this?
Juliana: That's what you want to tell Jack, don't you? That you once fell in love with a girl, that you've recently started thinking about her again, and that you'd like to try again. Or am I wrong?
Ruby: (Sighs) I can't deny it. But I'd like to speak with her before. There's no point in giving Jack an awkward moment if Brooke isn't interested in trying anything serious with me again.
Juliana: You already promised Jack that you'll tell him what you're feeling. So even if that mermaid tells you she's not interested in trying again, you'll have to tell Jack what you once fell for her.
Ruby: (Sighs) You're right.
Juliana: I recommend you something. Now relax, enjoy the rest of the day, and enjoy this party that was prepared especially for you.
Jack: (Comes up behind Ruby and hands her the bottle of rum) Here you go, Apple Pie.

Ruby received the bottle of rum and thanked Jack but looking at Juliana, so Jack felt grateful for bringing the bottle, and Juliana felt grateful for the advice she had given Ruby.

Ruby: (Receives the bottle but still looking at Juliana) Thank you. (Takes a sip of rum)
