Chapter LXV .

"Between Life and Death"

It had been a couple of years since Ruby's death. Years in which Jack had mourned the death of his Apple Pie by getting drunk on rum in Tortuga.

One day of the year, Jack realized that he would get nowhere if he continued like that, so remembering that the Heart of Fire was still beating somewhere in the Caribbean, Jack decided to gather his crew and take the Black Pearl back to sail after two years, to try to reunite with who he called Princess.

The Black Pearl had already been sailing for a few days and they were already reaching a point where food was beginning to become scarce.

《At midnight》
Gibbs: How is it that you have managed to sail for so long without a drop of rum, Captain?
Marty: And you haven't slept for at least three days in a row!
Jack: (From the helm) I'm following something that gives me all the energy I need!
Johari: (Takes water from one of the few remaining canteens with water) Captain! We need to go to port! We are running out of food!
Scrum: Two pirates have already fainted due to lack of water and food, Captain!
Jack: (Looking at his compass) I feel that we are close! I promise you that at dawn we will already be stepping on land!

The pirates grew hungrier and thirstier, but Jack remained confident that by dawn they would reach their destination.

As promised by Jack, with the first light of the morning, Pike, who was in the crow's nest, saw a ship anchored in a port. The pirate, growing thirsty, called out that they had reached land, cheering the awake pirates, and waking the sleeping ones.

Pike: (From the crow's nest) Land in sight!
Jack: (Seeing the ship anchored in the harbor with his spyglass) Let's go to port!

When Jack anchored the Pearl next to the other ship, all the pirates, without waiting for the captain's order, got out in search of water and food. The only ones left on board were Jack, the monkey, and Johari, noting the captain's disappointment that they were on familiar land.

Johari: (Seeing a disappointed and confused Jack at the helm) Let's go, Captain. You have to hydrate. You haven't eaten for almost three days.
Jack: (Ignoring the warnings of the only female pirate on board) This can't be real.
Johari: What happened, Jack?
Jack: Did you see where we are? Our neighboring ship?
Johari: Of course I saw. We're at Pantano Island.
Jack: The Lotus Flower... (•••) (Looking at his compass) Why are we here? We should be where the Heart of Fire is!
Johari: (Tries to calm him) Jack...?
Jack: Aye?
Johari: (Looking at the compass) That compass... points what you want the most, right?
Jack: It's supposed to. But now, for some reasons, it isn't working.
Johari: It is working. But what you want most is not the Heart of Fire. What you want most is to be with Ruby. And in this Island are the Gates of Hell.
Jack: (Offers her the compass) Then can you help me?
Johari: (Denies lowering Jack's hand without grabbing the compass) I also miss Ruby. But I'm pretty sure of what I want the most. From years.
Jack: Then how are we gonna do it?
Johari: We should start by looking for water and food. Let's go to Ruby's shack.
Jack: (Nods sadly)

Arriving at the shack, it was Johari who prepared a large plate of food for herself, for Jack, and for the monkey.

Jack: (While taking a sip of water) I hadn't realized how badly I needed this.
Johari: It clears your mind. Now you will be able to think more clearly.
Jack: Let's go to what's important. How do you intend to find the Heart of Fire if what I most long for is to be with Ruby and the Heart is not what you most want?
Johari: My question is, how do you intend to give back Flame the Heart if you don't even know how to do it? I don't think it's as easy as it sound.
Jack: What do you mean?
Johari: I think it was good to get to this island. Probably, the only one who knows how to bring Flame back to earth with the Heart of Fire is Hades.
Jack: And how do you intend to find the God of the Underworld?
Johari: Don't forget where we are. In this island are the Gates of Hell.
Jack: Are you saying that we should go down?
Johari: (Nods with a piece of food in her mouth)
Jack: (Anxious) And do you think that we will see my Apple Pie there?
Johari: It's an option.
Jack: And do you know what we need to go down there?
Johari: I lived here for many years and I was a very good friend of Tia Dalma. I know a lot of that voodoo witch's charms.
Jack: It's that a Yes?
Johari: (Nods with food in her mouth)
Jack: Then what are we waiting for?
Johari: If you'll allow me, I'd like to finish this plate of food and have at least a couple more glasses of water.
Jack: (Nods and goes on eating)

Jack, after eating and drinking much-needed water, fell asleep on a sofa inside the shack. Johari took the opportunity to look for what was necessary to go down to the Hell of the Caribbean. To do that, she searched in the Lotus Flower and inside the same shack.

On the Lotus Flower she obtained the Onyx Owl, which she had kept in a small trunk in the ship's captain's cabin; and a map showing the island they were on right now.

In the shack, she searched in a drawer for a copy of the Keys of Hell, which did not have the sapphire inlaid; and a small wooden box that was filled with some blue pills, pills that would allow them to be seen by the souls in the Hell of the Caribbean.

Then, she filled a few canteens with water to be able to hydrate on the trip, and from an underground cellar, she brought up a couple of barrels of rum, knowing that it was Jack's favorite drink and that with that she could calm Jack down a bit and even manipulate him if necessary.
