"How was your night?"
Mitchell looked up from the menu to stare at his mom. It felt like she knew something, knew what had happened to him last night.
"My night was good."
"Anything unusual happened?"
"No. Why do you ask?"
She stared at him for a length of time but didn't say anything else. He shifted his gaze away from hers to look out the window. He let out a relieved sigh when his phone pinged, signaling he had received a new message. He took his phone from his pocket to read the message.
It was from Markus.
"Why don't you invite him over?"
"He might be busy."
Mitchell dialed Markus's number, biting his lip as he waited for him to answer his phone.
"What's up, babe?"
"Nothing much. I'm here at the diner with my mom. Do you want to join us?"
"Look outside."
Mitchell glanced outside, and a smile formed on his face. Markus was outside leaning against his vehicle, waving at him. Kev and Susan were also with him.
"Come join us since you're already here."
He hang up the phone still smiling as he watched them enter the diner, making their way to the table.
Mitchell scooted over so Markus could sit next to him. Kev and Susan sat next to his mom.
"Markus, how have you been?"
"Good. And you?"
"Missed seeing your handsome face."
Mitchell groaned, turning red with embarrassment. His mom needed a filter. But the others just laughed at her comment.
"I'm having a birthday celebration next weekend. Would you be able to attend?"
"I wouldn't miss it."
Markus looked at him, resting a hand on his thigh, as he gave him a wink.
"Did you already order?"
"No. We were just about to place our orders. Would you like anything?"
"Fish burger with fries and a coke."
A waitress came to collect their orders then left. He noticed that she never made eye contact with Markus.
"So, what are your plans for today?"
"We're meeting Tia and the others."
"They were asking about you."
"Do you want to join us?" Markus asked him, taking a sip of his water.
"Sure, if it's not a problem."
"They wanted you to come along. So, it's not a problem."
"I can't wait to see them again."
They continued talking, waiting for their orders when Mitchell saw Charlie walked into the diner. He sat down on one of the stool at the counter his back to their table.
It was only when the waitress was leaving their table did he finally noticed them. "Markus, how are you doing?" Charlie asked, walking over to their table.
Markus looked up, "Hey, Charlie. I'm good. You?"
"I'm good. I'm here to pick up an order."
"Are you working today?"
