"I'm a Light Caster." Mitchell stated as he walked into the kitchen. His mom was standing near the counter, her back towards him.
He had decided to confront his mom about his powers.
Sarah paused for a second before she turned to look at him. "I wasn't supposed to tell you until your birthday."
"Why on my birthday?"
"It has something to do with your powers. On your birthday your powers will amplify when the blue moon rises."
"Do you have any powers?"
"I'm clairvoyant. But you inherited your dad's powers."
"Is it necessary to have powers to be to mate with supernatural beings?"
"I've seen one or two find humans as their mates."
"If you're clairvoyant, then you knew that Markus was my mate before our birth." It wasn't a question but a statement.
"Yes, I did. We all knew."
"Why did you pretend not to know him?"
"At first I wanted to protect you but Melina spoke to me about the harm it will cause."
Mitchell knew where she was coming from with her fears. But he needed answers.
"Mom, I want to know the real reason why we moved to Pine Crest."
Sarah walked over to the table and sat down. "It was getting to dangerous for Markus. You saw how they were trying to claim him for themselves."
Mitchell's face turned sour. Yeah, he saw how they acted like animals.
"What about the shadow?"
"The shadow is known as the deeper darkness. Markus is a very powerful Hybrid. This darkness needs Markus's powers to take control of other supernatural beings."
"Is Markus that powerful?"
"Yes, he's that powerful." Sarah affirmed. "If this darkness manages to fully merge with Markus, we're in big trouble."
"I'll make sure it doesn't happen. I'm not going to allow anything to hurt Markus."
"That's why we need to get your powers under control. I'm going to help you with that."
"Elder Clarence was the guy you were talking to in the kitchen that day, wasn't he?"
Sarah stared at him. "Did you meet him?"
"Yes, I did. Malachi told me that I had to meet him. I overheard him warning Uncle Thomas about Malachi."
"Did you see Thomas?"
"Yes, I saw him. But he didn't know I was there." Mitchell debated telling her about what happened in the graveyard. "Is he a ghost?"
"No, he's not a ghost. He's a demon."
"A what?"
"Before he had the villagers turned against Malachi, Thomas made a deal with an entity. He traded his soul to have Malachi killed. After Malachi was killed, the spell on the villagers broke, but it was too late when they realized when had happened. They all gathered together and had Thomas hanged for his crimes."
"Malachi cursed his generation, and dad was born in that cursed generation."
"Your father is related to Thomas but it didn't affect him. Because of your dad's power, he was able to quell the curse."
"He's trying to get a body."
"Who's trying to get a body?"
"Uncle Thomas is trying to get a body. He wanted to take mine but he found out about Markus."
Sarah jumped up. "How did he find out about Markus?"
"I don't know. Malachi warned me about this."
"How long?"
"Four months ago. He came to me and warned me about Thomas. I didn't believe him at first, but after witnessing a few things, I quickly changed my mind."
"If Thomas knows about Markus's powers, then that could explain the parasite."
"What do you mean?"
"Thomas was the one that gave Markus the parasite."
"How? I didn't noticed anything strange."
"Markus drank something that was already tainted with the parasite. He wouldn't see it because it's not visible to the eye."
"I didn't see him drink anything suspicious." Mitchell's mind flashed back to the night at the club. "What about the club?"
"Do you think someone gave him the drink at the club?"
"It couldn't have been anywhere else. That night at the club, Markus seemed different."
"I'll talk to his parents."
Mitchell checked the time, then got up. "Mom, I have to go."
"Make sure you call me once you get there. We need to take precautions."
"Don't worry, I'm not alone. Chris is outside waiting for me. Markus felt uneasy with me coming here alone."
"Markus is very intuitive." Sarah said with a smile. "If only I was a couple of years younger."
Mitchell rolled his eyes. "Mom, don't start this again. Leave my boyfriend alone."
Sarah laughed, "I'm kidding. I love Markus like a son."
"I'll see you tomorrow."
"Why don't you bring the gang over tomorrow? It's the weekend."
"I'll get back to you after talking to them."
Sarah followed him out the kitchen to the front door. "Chris, drive safe sweetie."
"I will, Mrs. Wilkins."
Mitchell gave her a quick kiss, then bounded down the driveway to the vehicle. Chris waited for him to enter the car, before he jumped in the driver's seat.
"My mom wants the gang to come over tomorrow."
"I don't think anyone would object to seeing your mom. Will she be cooking?"
"Of course. She'll probably coerce Markus into helping her prepare something."
"Markus will be willing to cook with her."
"I'll talk to the others and set a time."
Mitchell glanced in the rearview mirror and saw the vehicle behind them. It was the same one he saw when he first moved here.
"We're being followed."
