"He's been up there for almost twenty minutes."

Mitchell was feeling restless without Markus in his sight. He felt that deep, rumbling charge, gathering in his core. A tingling sensation prickled under his flesh as his powers awoke.

Kev gripped his shoulders, forcing Mitchell to face him.

"Mitchell, you need to breathe."

"Kev, I don't like this."

Kev held his eyes and gave him a long, searching look.

"I need you to listen to me. Micah would never hurt him."

Mitchell released a pent-up breath, but his gaze returned to the stairs.

"How do you know?"

"Take my word for it."

Mitchell turned his head slightly as Elijah walked in their direction. He kept his gaze on him, yet was aware of the stairs in his peripheral vision.

Kev straightened, adopting a more formal guarded posture as he approached.

Elijah's steps halted as he paused to stare at them. "I come with friendly intentions."

"Be straight with us. What's the true reason you're here?"

"Micah never told me the full details."

"What did he tell you?" Mitchell asked.

"He told me he had a friend that needed protection." Elijah's gaze drifted to the ceiling. "I guess that friend is Markus."

"More protection?"

"Micah spoke about an evil spirit wanting to take over his body."

Silence stretched as Mitchell glanced over at Kev. They both already knew Thomas wanted Markus's body.

"Did Micah ever mentioned what would happen to Markus if he got possessed by an evil spirit?"

Elijah's head jerked in a negative gesture. "I've seen a glimpse of the darkness inside Markus. If an evil spirit possesses his body, it won't be good for Pine Crest."

"It won't be good for anyone. Human or supernatural." Kev added.

Mitchell jumped up from his seat, eyes on the stairs. "I need to talk to your cousin, right now."

He rushed towards the stairs, but skidded to a halt when he saw Markus walking down the stairs.

Mitchell's eyes fell on the man keeping pace with Markus. He gripped Markus's arm and pulled him to his side.

"What took you so long? I was getting worried."

The tension left his shoulders as Markus's gaze softened into a tender smile.

"I'm here now." Markus leaned in for a kiss, then turned to introduce him to Micah. "Micah, I would like you to meet Mitchell."

Micah held out his hand. "It's really nice to meet you."

Mitchell returned Micah's handshake, before turning to Markus.

"How are you feeling?"

"I feel fine."

Mitchell's eyes drifted to the box Markus was holding with curiosity.

"Why are you holding that box?"

"Oh," Markus's gaze fell to the box in his hand. "I'll tell you later."

Mitchell's brow furrowed as he gave the box a long, hard look.

"Is it safe?"

"Yes, it's completely safe."

Mitchell didn't know Micah well enough to let his guard down around him.

"I would never harm Markus." Micah spoke up. "I knew from a long time he was going to be very important to us."

"What do you mean?"

"This isn't an appropriate place to discuss that."

"Are you worried about us being heard?"

"After the incident, I had a friend put up a protective spell to fend off any evil. I just think it's better to discuss this with everyone involved."

"Okay, that sounds like a good idea."

After a short talk, they left the club and headed toward the vehicle.

As they approached the vehicle, Mitchell attention was drawn to a man staring intently at them from the doorway of a building.

The man shifted but didn't move from his position. He stopped dead, his eyes narrowing as he regarded the man.

"Mitchell, what is it?" Markus had also stopped walking.

"There's a man staring at us."

"I know." Markus glanced in the direction where the man was standing. "He's not going to hurt us."

"Who is he?"

"He's a family friend."

As they got inside the car, his gaze strayed to the man but he was nowhere to be seen. He turned his attention to Markus.

"Why did you took so long talking to Micah?" There was a protective edge to his voice.

"The parasite was slipped into my drink."

"Wouldn't you have noticed?"

"There was no way to tell."

"Did he find out who was responsible?"

"Yes, he did." Markus tapped the box in his hand. "It was a temporary bartender. He just started working at the club."

"What are you going to do with this person?"

"I don't need to do anything. Micah already took care of it."

"Took care of it? How?" Even as the words left his mouth, Mitchell knew at once what he meant.

"How does this make you feel?"

Mitchell leaned back against the seat. Did he felt mournful that a person was killed?

No, he didn't.

He was actually indifferent to the person's death. Whoever tries to hurt Markus didn't deserve his sympathy.

Mitchell turned his head to face Markus. "I think he deserved whatever punishment he got."
